Music reviews of Infest

Music Review: unoriginal presentation of strong subject matter
Rating: 1 Stars

I wouldn't normally review music but my ditaste with this album leaves me feeling as if i have no choice. First of all, I'd like to mention that this album was given to me and that i never had any interest in purchasing it after hearing, for example, "Last Resort" on the radio. Supposedly, we are supposed to be able to "relate" to the lyrics in this song and the rest of the album. And sure, as pathetic as it is, if you're a normal american teen, you probably can in some way relate to the aggressive lyrics in these songs about suicide, a "broken home", the ills of capitalism and conformity ("between insects and angels"). Thus, these are relevant issues to the listeners of Papa Roach.

Hence, my problem with Papa Roach is not the subject matter discussed per se, but rather the way in which this subject matter is presented. Rather than present thought-provoking and intelligent lyrics, Papa Roach instead gives us lyrical arrangments that are cliche and probably could have been written by a grade schooler. There is not a single instance on this album when i find myself saying "Wow, i wish i thought of that" or "wow, that's such an interesting way of putting it". I would reccomend to Papa Roach that they invest in a thesaurus. In conjunction with the banality of Papa Roach's lyrics (i am not saying that the subject matter is not volatile and moving, only that it is presented in a terrible manner), they feel the need to repeat these lyrics over and over. As anybody who has heard "Last Resort" knows, Papa Roach is big on the formulatic way of writing songs these days: a catchy intro, a few sets of lyrics, each time followed by a chorus that is repeated ad nauseam, with some sort of interlude about 2/3 of the way through (the "i can't stand living this way" segment in "Last Resort"). The choruses are repeated over and over. Apparently Papa Roach assumes that its listeners are unable to comprehend the already unoriginal lyrics the first ten times that they were repeated in the first chorus... so onto the second chorus. In short, if it was really profound, they wouldn't have to repeat the same words so many times.

Finally, this lack of creativity brings to mind another problem. Now, we all know that many musicians are out to present social commentary, etc. However, as i indicated above, there are many innovative and extremely creative ways of doing this that not only reject what is being criticized, but also areable to establish new values, whatever they may be (i should note that i am using a basic forumation found in the work of Nietzsche). Thus, in these cases, although the artist starts from an issue which she wishes to criticize, she is able to move into new territories and present the critique in an original manner, and in doing so, give deeper insights into what is being critisized as well as "plot new territories" in terms of establishing new values of her own to replace those which she finds conflict with. However, this certainly is not the case with Papa Roach--each and every song on this album fails to act in a positive manner--and by "positive manner" i DO NOT mean "dont worry, be happy--I DO MEAN move away from that which they criticize and present in a negative manner. They are so intimately bound to that which they critisize and present in a negative manner, i feel that it is not at all innappropriate to say that Papa Roach should THANK their abusive and neglecting parents, they should THANK the capitalist system and conformity because without that which they take issue with, THEY WOULD HAVE NO LYRICS. By this, i mean that, in failing to present any positive or original content, Papa Roach is only reactionary to thier problems--thus, take away the abusive parent and capitalism, and you no longer have Papa Roach. Overall, Papa Roach starts with volatile subject matter and thinks that by making a lot of noise and spouting out mundane lyrics they can somehow add... Well, they can't add anything because they are purely reactionary to thier problems. For those who think that Papa Roach's lyrics are insightful,i would reccomend that you, even if for just a moment, move outside of the rap-rock genre (and so much of rock in general today) that apparently thinks taht the rest of the world wants to hear them whine about their problems.

Description of Infest

2000 album coupled with a 6 track bonus CD including, 'Between Angels & Insects', 'Last Resort', 'Dead Cell' (Live), 'Legacy' (Non Album Track), 'Broken Home' (video) & 'Last Resort' (video). 2001.
Papa Roach is a breed apart in the nearly overfull rap-rock arena. The Northern California-bred quartet lacks the bluster of Limp Bizkit and the political agenda of Rage Against the Machine, instead serving up an ultra-intense, highly personal brand of funk-punk-rock-rap on their stunning major-label debut. Closer in spirit to Faith No More than Korn, Papa Roach's signature sound is defined by Coby Dick's raspy, forceful vocals. Dick's pointed lyrics astutely address everything from divorce ("Broken Home") and attention deficit disorder ("Thrown Away") to alcoholism ("Binge"). Jerry Horton's memorable, melodic, and insinuating guitar lines and the band's aggro, moshable rhythms provide added weight. Papa Roach's intensity is never forced; the songs here are varied, discrete, tuneful, and cohesive. Indeed, the mellow, reggae- like "Tightrope" is as compelling as the commanding "Last Resort," making Infest one of the most arresting heavy-music debuts of 2000. -- Katherine Turman
