Music Review: IT'S ABOUT THE MELODY

I first heard Paolo Conte sing on the soundtrack of the forgettable movie "No Reservations", and as soon as I heard him I made a note to myself to check it out. Who was he? What was that fabulous, somewhat humorous music? I went to Amazon.com and found the soundtrack CD and checked it out........ And I am so glad I did! I guess I have never really listened to music sung in a different langauge -- lots of music from other countries, but always sung in English. Except for Edith Piaf whom I also love for her melodies and her humor.... So I thought about Paolo Conte's music for probably a year .... and every once in a while I would go to Amazon and hear a little bit of his other songs.... and finally I bought this CD and I love it more than I can say!
Sometimes when I see a movie I read in a review that it is "character driven".... and so I have come to think of this CD as being "melody driven". WHERE did he get these various melodies? It is a mixture of American jazz, rhythm and blues, country, opera, Parisian love songs, and probably Italian influences since he is Italian, but I don't know any other Italian singers, or Italian music that I can think of. The first time I listened to the CD was in my car, and I clicked through all the songs to get a feel for them..... and immediately I jotted down the numbers of the ones I especially liked, and that was almost all of them! (I have to think of the song by it's number placement on the CD, since I still don't read or understand any Italian. Makes no difference here.....) I have also played this CD for my husband who normally listens to "50s oldies" only.... and to my daughter who lived in Italy for a couple of years, a few years ago. They also immediately loved the music!
Like the patron who doesn't know anything about art, but knows what he likes, I don't know much about music but know what I like.... And these are my favorites on this CD:
#2 Sotto le stelle del jazz - The melody is romantic and toe-tapping at the same time.... Smooth jazz.... Very catchy, fabulous melody.
#3 Via con me - The song that was in "No Reservations" and was immediately charming and catchy.
#5 Sparring partner - This is such a lovely melody that I can hardly believe it is called Sparring partner. It is romantic and the wonderful melody reminds me of a mysterious black and white 1940s film.
#9 Happy Feet - Have you ever been to a children's tap dance recital? I have and it's fun, and this sounds just like it is supposed to sound, although I don't think the voices that join Mr. Conte are children.
#13 Colleghi trascurati - This totally reminds me of Paris, especially the strings and acordion and the playfulness.
#16 Dragon - This song stays in my head for hours after listening to it. The piano is magnificent and always makes me think of Jerry Lee Lewis and of blues guitars as well as jazz. Love it!
