Music reviews of Vices & Virtues

Music Review: Compelling Third Effort
Rating: 4 Stars

Fans of the emo-pop outfit Panic! At the Disco had to question if a new PATD would materialize given the exiting of half of the band - co-founding member Ryan Ross and Jon Walker. Despite a break-up that might completely rip apart a successful band, the two remaining members - Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith release their third effort, Vices & Virtues with the help of producers John Feldmann & Butch Walker. The effort mixes the fun of A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and the eclecticism of sophomore effort Pretty. Odd. pretty masterfully. Purists will always favor the group's first effort, while eclectics and alt-fans respect the quirkiness of Pretty. Odd. and love the continuation of the vision on Vices & Virtues. This effort is not the second-coming, but it is one of the years more fascinating rock releases.

The effort opens with "The Ballad of Mona Lisa," which features the solid, yet bizarre songwriting of the group. The production work is appropriate and as always plays a part in the effectiveness of the band's music. The quirky, yet catchy chorus is a high point: "Whoa, Mona Lisa/you're guaranteed to run this town/Whoa, Mona Lisa/I'd pay to see you frown." "Let's Kill Tonight" is a valedictory moment, where the band bring eccentricity to a `fever pitch.' Pounding drums, background vocals, and elegant strings help to scope the mood of "Let's Kill Tonight's" eeriness. Filled with idiosyncratic lines, perhaps the most memorable is "May your feet serve you well, and the rest be sent to Hell, where they always have belonged..." "Hurricane" keeps the momentum flowing with another palette laden with an array of unique sounds. As always, the songwriting is creative and Brendon Urie sings incredibly convincingly.

"Memories" is a bit more `down to earth' compared to the previous cuts, but that does not dare diminish it's effectiveness. "Trade Mistakes" is a standout with it string-laden opening and pounding percussive beat. The lyrics speak for themselves - well sort of: "I may never sleep tonight/ as long as you're still burning bright/ if I could trade mistakes for sheep/count me away before you sleep..." "Ready to Go (Get me Out of my Mind)" shows off the beauty of Brendon Urie's tenor, as does the more acoustic driven "Always," the briefest, most sensitive cut from Vices & Virtues. "The Calendar" is emo-songwriting at its best in which Brendon Urie urges "Put another ex on the calendar/summer's on its deathbed..." Layered vocals near the 3:00 mark help to make this cut shine brightly.

"Sarah Smiles" possesses a nice folk-rock feel while closer "Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met)" may be the album's most eccentric cut. "Witches" ends the album dramatically and exceptionally: ""Ever since we met/ i only shoot up with your perfume/ it's the only thing/ that makes me feel as good as you do..."

Overall, [ASIN:B004LP601S Vices & Virtues]] is as captivating as any other Panic! At The Disco album. Here, the band merge the best of their first album with the eccentricities that made their underrated second album so compelling. While this effort won't be enough to resurge the fan base that fell in love with "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" (written by ex-member Ryan Ross), it will please fans who love both sides equally of Panic! At the Disco. At least they picked the exclamation mark back up, right?

Description of Vices & Virtues

Panic! At The Disco, the platinum-selling and Grammy-nominated group from Las Vegas, NV, is back and in better shape than ever with their hugely anticipated third studio album, Vices & Virtues. Two members lighter, the group is looking to stave off rumors of their disbanding by showing the world they are very much in the picture, and ready to take the world on once again. Based on the energy and response from their sold-out album preview show in New York, it seems Panic! is going to do just that.

Vices & Virtues pushes the classic Panic! sound to new heights, capturing the glory of A Fever You Can't Sweat Out all the while securing their spot with a new generation of fans.
