Music Review: ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING BEAUTY

for all of you out there (you know who you are) who revere the likes of alanis morisette or the whiny estrogen stereotypes who headlined the 'lilith fair' as examples of the power of women in rock, you need to suck on this album for a while. the difference between a serious artist and a pop(ular) phenomenon becomes achinly clear very soon. the majority of the tracks on this album can also be found on pj's 'rid of me' album in slightly diluted form (due to albini's production treatment in which some of polly's vocals are barely audible). it is here on her 4-track demos that the life and power of these songs are fully realized. polly's raw, arresting vocals and fierce, mud-soaked guitar pierce your veins and infect your blood with her visions. lyrically she is just as potent as she is compositionally, touching on subjects most popular musicians don't have the courage to go near. i almost took my chevy for a tumble off the road when i first heard the lyrics to "easy", where pj tackes the difficult subject of the male perception of female 'looseness':"and i deserve it, i asked you for it, have to admit it, we dress like targets. ya i deserve it, give me no leeway, i'll give you five dollars you can call me devil's gateway."
other outstanding tracks that didn't make it to the 'rid of me' album include the sublime and darkly humorous "reeling", "hardly wait" (try to listen to it without feeling the desire to spit in the face of your god), "driving", "m-bike" and "goodnight". this album is a must have for anyone interested in brutally honest and brilliant artistic expression (or, for that matter, anyone interested in hearing blues the way it was ment to sound). and for those who are interested in the immediate, superficial, and unchallenging gratification of pop music there is always (yawn) madonna.
