Music reviews of Testify

Music Review: Old-school POD fans beware...
Rating: 2 Stars

I've read through several of the reviews listed for this album. And I've had conversations with fellow rock/metal lovers about the same. I'll write here what seems to be a few recurrent themes about POD and "Testify" in general.

First off, I'll start off by saying that POD was my favorite band when "Fundamental Elements of Southtown" hit the shelves. I'd never heard of POD before then (to those who don't know, they had a few underground releases before signing with Atlantic, not to exclude "Snuff the Punk" and the legendary but underrated "Brown").

Fell in love...as a matter of fact, I do believe that through the avenues of Creed and POD, I was introduced to heavier and heavier music. Obviously, that was years ago, and my tastes have matured to the darker side of "nu-metal" and hard rock (in the vein of Disturbed, Atreyu, Korn, and the like...went from one end of the musical spectrum to the other).

As aforementioned, I loved "...Southtown." I loved "Satellite" even more. I recognized the change from straight-up rap/rock to something a little more mature. And I recognized the band's subtle longing to give their music more of a latin twist (understandably). So I was able to forgive them when they introduced their self-titled album. After listening to it repeatedly, it grew on me, much like a leech.

But the point is, I had to LEARN to like it.

Hearing (false) rumors that "Testify" would be POD's attempt to return to their roots, I was psyched about the upcoming album, and picked it up the very day it came out.

What a disappointment.

Sure...they reintroduced a little rock-fused rap (i.e., "Goodbye for Now"), but there is so much repetition...lyrically and musically. I guess if you could take the self-titled album and mesh it with "Southtown", this is what you would wind up with. Doesn't sound bad, except that it DOES sound bad. I could only tolerate to listen to the CD in its entirety a few times. A few songs are more tolerable than others, but it's so fused with latin twists and tired riffs that the band, in and of itself, has become boring.

To their credit, the new guitarist really shines in this record..."that guy" that replaced Marcos. But you don't have much of the dark or the heavy on this one, at least not like "Southtown" or "Satellite." With "Testify," you only get a taste of why they're still thrown in the vague "Rock" category at your local music store.

I recognize that bands have to change, or evolve, in order to keep their music from growing bland (that's my ambiguous, indirect shot at Linkin Park). Look at Korn's new album, "See You on the Other Side." Definitely not my favorite Korn album. But I can respect it, because they didn't COMPLETELY abandon their style from their self-titled record. Now, if they produced a record insanely similar to "See You...", then I would give them a review hauntingly similar to this one.

In short, POD produced an album so similar to their last album, that I regret even buying it. Never thought I'd say it, but I give up on Payable On Death.

Fans of Southtown and Satellite, stay away from "Testify."

Description of Testify

Since their release of their first Atlantic album just six years ago, P.O.D. has earned global acclaim and multi-platinum sales for their trademark brand of uplifting power rock. The aptly titled Testify displays the band at their fiery best. Longtime followers of P.O.D.-aka "the Warriors"-will rejoice in many of the band's trademark sonics, from the full-on energy of "This Time" to the "Boom"-esque refrain of the ferocious "Lights Out" and "Say Hello" to the ulitmately inspiring message of the poignant first single, "Goodbye for Now."
Five albums into its career P.O.D. stands at a critical juncture. The youthful nation that made this band of California Christians into what it is today has grown older and its tastes have grown more refined, meaning that P.O.D. may have to follow suite. Testify's first act suggests that the band has moved in that direction--there's enough heaviness throughout to please those who've joined the P.O.D. posse within the last two years while the group's appreciation for both hip-hop and reggae--deepens. Hasidic MC Matisyahu guests on two tracks ("Roots In Stereo," "Strength Of My Life"), while "Sounds Like War" and "On The Grind" are noble attempts at attracting more diverse audiences. Although the material remains accessible throughout, both the listener and band both grow weary just after the album's halfway point; the final tracks prove largely indistinguishable from each other, even when tempos and attitudes appear to shift. Testify will please the faithful but despite its best intentions P.O.D. may have some trouble finding new converts.--Jedd Beaudoin
