Music reviews of The Saga Continues

Music Review: The Longest Review I Ever Wrote....
Rating: 5 Stars

P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Puffy, Sean Combs, Sean John, Shiny Suit Man...can this guy have any more identities? Well, I personally feel what he's doing actually...it makes him more three dimensional than most music lovers allow hip-hop recording artists to be. For example, Snoop will always be that weed-smokin' gangsta to most of his fans, even though there's probably way more to Calvin Broadus than that; but do all these rap-loving kids who AREN'T FROM THE 'HOOD AND MAY HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN A REAL 'HOOD even care about the humanity behind Snoop Dogg? Probably not...so it makes sense why so many people would hate Sean Combs for being a successful, three-dimensional, Black man who refuses to simply become a caricature of himself - he's breaking the 'rules'. Mr. Combs has made it virtually impossible to attach just one label to him - and that's exactly what deconstructing stereotypes is all about; Sean Combs is doing his thing...hate him or love him, he's only one of a handful of Black recording artists who have actually gotten behind the scenes of a music industry with a history of only exploiting Black musicians, and then 'robbing' them blind; just ask Little Richard or George Clinton about that...

That being said...

I enjoyed this album because it is not only long (77 minutes!) but it is also of quality - and defintely an improvement on 1999's ill-fated "Forever" LP. There isn't much filler in my opinion, but there are standouts cuts, and standout rappers as well on this album.

"Bad Boy For Life" doesn't sound like anything that Bad Boy has ever done before, and it works well. "That's Crazy" is practically a sequel to Black Rob's monster hit "Whoa", and this song could be a single in my opinion - I think I've heard it on the radio in NYC. Of course, "Let's Get It" is a slammin track, and the video is like a millenial update of the "Flava In Ya Ear: Remix" video with it's slick, black on white visual motif. (The kids in the video are cute too)

Next we get an interlude in which P. Diddy calls out the Lox, and goes into "Diddy", a bubbly Neptunes track that gives a subtle nod to BDP's "Jimmy" for those who remember that one from the late 80s. We continue with "Blast Off" which is a solid album cut.

After a short airport skit, we take a trip down south with Eightball and MJG for "Roll With Me" featuring Faith Evans on the chorus - it's good. "On Top" recycles the "P.E. 2000 Remix" beat - and it works very well, but it's the next joint, "Where's Sean" that really shines. "Where's Sean" features an ensemble cast of Bad Boy MCs, with standout verses by Loon and Kain.

G-Dep's solo turn, "Child Of The Ghetto" is phenomenal...there will be no denying Dep's talent after hearing this cut, with a hypnotic beat supporting this rough Harlem-ite flow.

Next we're introduced to Ms. Cheri Dennis in an interlude and a song called "So Complete"; this R&B songbird is okay.

After a "smoke" interlude, a P-Funk beat takes over, and George Clinton adds his signature vocals before Diddy comes in on "Lonely", with Kain and Mark Curry. I like this song a lot because it has a West Coast feel to it.

The West Coast vibe continues with "I Need A Girl", probably my favorite song on the album because it is so darn smooth...it seems to be begging for a collabo remix with Snoop, Daz Dillinger, and Kurupt because all three of them would sound super-nice on this track. Mario Winans sings the chorus, and the lyrics are just interesting to listen to, especially Diddy's verse about his "little Mami that he'll always miss"...

We get a somber interlude, another solid album cut, "If You Want This Money", a 'hater' interlude, and then a great track called, "Back For Good Now" - just hear it.

"Can't Believe" sounds simply majestic...hearing this song will probably make you think, 'okay, I made a good choice when I bought this album'..."Can't Believe" is classic Bad Boy R&B, a la Total's 1995 jam eternal, "Can't You See"...

"The Last Song" is just that...we get a interlude, and then we're done. It's obvious that a lot of work went into making this album and it shows. Enjoy...
