Music reviews of Prince of Darkness

Music Review: Just one complaint, they castrated Stayin' Alive
Rating: 4 Stars

I can't really see what most of you are whining about. Most people already bought the 1995 remasters of the 3 CDs that got totally mangled and the 4 that got completely deleted. Though I will admit that really annoys me as well, especially the deleted discs. Ultimate Sin has more tracks I like than Bark at the Moon does. I don't see why he's scrapping all his live stuff aside from Budokan and Tribute either, but that's not the point at all, we're talking about a boxed set.

This really is an interesting compilation, and I can't really complain about $27 I spent at Circuit City either. Not a bad value even without the Ozzfest deal, which I probably won't take advantage of, unless the fact that it has to be a General Admission ticket allows me the legal loophole of getting an extra General Admission Pit ticket for free (once you go pit there's no going back, besides, it's just such a cool lineup this year, much like last year actually, it would be a tragedy to go for the cheap seats). So, I'm going to base this on the merit of the actual tracks. I mainly purchased this set because of discs 3 and 4 because I have all the studio albums (1995 and 2002 releases), so I thought it was great that some live tracks and demos got put on the first 2, it's something different to listen to. I was looking forward to hearing the new covers and they did not disappoint (was expecting "Fire" to be a Jimi Hendrix cover, actually, but that's OK, I like this one even better). But I was especially looking forward to finally having high quality versions of three tracks specifically, because finding the original CDs they were released on was proving difficult if not impossible. Purple Haze and Born To Be Wild did not disappoint. Sadly, I discovered they remixed Stayin' Alive and it just doesn't sound right, I'll be sticking to my low quality 128K mp3 I guess (until I can find a lossless of the bootleg, since it's not even on a commercial CD, which is why I'm taking a point off for them getting it wrong). I also find it hard to believe Ozzy thought no one had heard it, I mean google for "ozzy osbourne + stayin' alive" and see if the first link doesn't get you a web site with a 128K MP3 of the original. Of course, he tends to be the king of understatements. Like, when he says he could have done two discs like disc three. When he could have done three or four. Which brings us to the next point.

Many of you noted the lack of "Close My Eyes Forever" and "Shock the Monkey". Some of the more observant noted "You Said It All" also wasn't there and even some people mentioned the Gary Moore and Bill Ward solo album tracks. For the record, there's also "Buried Alive" from "Return to the Centre of the Earth" and "Who's Fooling Who" from Iommi's solo album, not to mention Black Skies from a PC game that never emerged (available on the Dreamer single) and the song "No Place For Angels" for all those people who missed it on the "Gets Me Through" single. And let's not forget "Living With The Enemy" and "Voodoo Dancer" -- the two Ozzmosis extras that didn't get added to the re-issue as bonus tracks. Oh yeah, and "Vertical Man" from Ringo Starr's solo CD. Are you starting to get the concept here? Let's face it, there's too much stuff for him to have possibly included it all, besides, I already had everything on disc three except for four tracks, I had even burned it to my own "rare Ozzy" compilation (and it does have "Close My Eyes" and "Shock the Monkey" on it, and a fully uncensored "Nowhere to Run", in fact, I even ripped "Blue Suede Shoes" from the Black Sabbath - Musicladen DVD for it, but I did what fit my tastes). So would I rather see exactly what I already have or four tracks that I didn't? I wasn't crazy about "Shake Your Head" but I'm glad they included it and saved me from buying the CD it was on. It's also great they saved me the hassle of ripping the other "Walk On Water" from the DVD. Gives me more time to devote to making audio CDs from Metallica's boxed set DVDs.

Instead of complaining about what isn't there, you should make your judgements based on what IS there. That's what I'm doing, I don't like the remix of Stayin' Alive, and I think it was lame to use the censored version of Nowhere to Run (not that I can't fix that for the copy I burn to keep in my car anyway, I have the completely uncensored "extreme" version of Chef Aid, but it's extra work), that drags it down a notch or it would get a perfect score. It really is a great value for what you get.

And for those complaining about this not being "the real Ozzy" the "Prince of Darkness" with some "serious metal" well, I thought the point of cover songs was something artists did for fun, not to be serious, not to be like "this is the new direction I'm taking" or anything, just something for amusement and maybe a good laugh (like Born to be Wild, the "Oh Ozzy, Yes" part still cracks me up, and I've had a low quality mp3 of it for years). The problem I have is "Stayin' Alive" sounds too authentic and serious and not as much poking fun at Disco like the original was (well, that and they took all the distortion out so it doesn't have that metal sound anymore). It's like my gripe about Metallica's "Tuesday's Gone" (they forgot to Metallicize it) but this one has been de-metallized so that's a bit worse. But hey, I'm not letting one bad track ruin the entire compilation for me. It's just one track, no need to go blowing it out of proportion. Overall, it's still a good collection and still well worth the $27 I spent (though I wish I'd known Best Buy gave you a DVD, now I'll have waste time downloading that thing, since it wasn't included).

Description of Prince of Darkness

Limited Edition Four CD Box Set. CDs One and Two Feature Ozzy's Greatest Hits. CD Three is a Collection of Tracks with Collaborations from Other Artists, Including Primus, Therapy, was Not Was, Miss Piggy, Motorhead, and More. CD Four features Previously Unreleased Cover Songs by Ozzy, Including Tracks Originally Written by the Beatles, King Crimson, the Animals, and More.
Not entirely a career retrospective and decidedly not a vault raid that reveals the junk in the trunk, this four-disc collection chronicles Ozzy?s hot-burnt and all-too-brief Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman post-Black Sabbath era with Randy Rhoads and also the long road the Ozzman traveled in search of a guitarist that could ever come close to matching his late friend?s creative spark. Listening to material from albums such as Bark At The Moon and The Ultimate Sin reveals that even when Osbourne wasn?t flying all that high musically he did keep evolving and, in the often risk averse world of heavy metal, he often took chances that could have potentially alienated core fans ("Thank God For The Bomb" reveals that Ozzy may care about the planet but he doesn?t possess the same knack for politics as Bob Dylan) but made them embrace him even more. He managed to hit another career high with guitarist Zakk Wylde and the No More Tears album which provides some of the second disc?s finest moments. ("Mama I?m Coming Home" proves one of the underrated balladeer?s most poignant moments.) But the back end of this collection shines as much as its front with a disc that compiles various collaborative efforts, including a tussle with Miss Piggy on "Born To Be Wild" and a strange detour with Was (Not Was) on "Shake Your Head (Let?s Go To Bed)." The real gem is the fourth platter which finds Ozzy covering some of his favorite tunes from the past, including a moving and wholly accurate reading of John Lennon?s "Working Class Hero," a song that almost seems to have been written with Osbourne in mind. Ozzy may be the prince of darkness but he?s also the king of heavy metal and this set demonstrates, once more, exactly why. -- Jedd Beaudoin
