Music Review: The Long Surrender Of The Legal Tender

I want to talk about something that will not be of interest to everyone and won't help you decide whether you want to purchase this cd or not. But it is somewhat interesting. To me at least.
I love the music of Over The Rhine. Since I found out about them about a decade ago (I wish I had known about them earlier!) I have bought everything they have put out. I love almost all of it. Over The Rhine has developed a close relationship with their fans where they send out mass emails detailing what they are doing, telling us about things in their private and artistic lives. They put out limited edition live cd's that are only available through their website. It's all pretty cool and is unlike anything I've experienced with my other favorite artists.
Back in April of last year OTR sent out an email saying how they were getting ready to go into the studio to make their next album. This time they were going to try something different. They would enlist the help of their fans beforehand. This way they could have funds available to make the recording. We, the fans, would help them out and they would help us out with some extras. There was a number of different options available. If one pre-ordered the cd for the regular price of $15 they would get the release early plus access to a few songs (3 if I remember correctly) as downloads. It starts to get interesting for the higher levels. For $50.00 you get the following: 1. an early release of the cd before the public. 2. your name published in the actual booklet that comes with the cd. 3: immediate access to a download of early recorded demos of this album. 4. (and this was vague): maybe a little something extra from the band when the cd is released. If you wanted to go up to $100 you could get a special box set with special packaging and LP's. You could go higher at different tiers, up to some pretty great stuff like OTR playing a special concert for you and yours.
I opted for the $50 package. The thought of me having access to basically a new OTR cd download that day was too much to resist. The demos are wonderful by the way. I received the cd I believe in December, a couple months before the official release date. It comes in beautiful packaging with 2 little booklets. One booklet listed the names of all the people that contributed $50 or more, mine included. As far as the little something extra that OTR said might be forthcoming I got a new poem written by Linford from OTR for the people who helped make this record. What - they sent you a poem? No. They emailed me a poem. A Poem.
And I guess that is about it. Did I get everything they said I was going to get? Yes. I sent an email asking if that was everything. I received no response.
How do I feel about this? To be honest I feel cheated and a bit misused by people I trust and have respect for. Obviously it's not a huge deal and I knew beforehand (for the most part) what I signed up for. But I paid $50 for a CD, a booklet with my name in it, and a cd that I burned myself after downloading. If I spent $50 for any boxed set from another artist think about what I could expect for that. Then think about what we received here. Going from the number of names in the booklet almost 1000 people gave a minimum of $50 to OTR. That is well over $50,000 that they collected before doing anything. And for that $50 we received a cd and a download, and the cd was sold directly by the band so they also got back the costs of buying from a record label and a reseller.
What do I think would be the right thing to do for those 1000 people that trusted you with a not insignificant sum of money? How about send out an additional cd ep? How about a small booklet of Linfords's poems? Or another small collectible that no one else but those 1000 would receive? So what if it cost $10 or so. The additional $25 in profit is not enough? I guess what bothers me is that this is a band that implies intimacy with, and care for, their fans. What happened here shows that is really not the case.
As for the music itself? Yeah, as are most OTR recordings it is pretty great. Gorgeous vocals, beautiful profound lyrics. A few more classic songs from a great band. If you like OTR you will like this. Go ahead and buy it. It is certainly worth the fifteen dollars.
