Music Review: Valuable Respighi Additions

Respighi's concertos and concertante works are becomming better known through recordings, though they will probably never become concert staples. In the case of his violin works, this is an incredible shame, since both works are rapturously beautiful, capturing a Pre-Raphaelite sound world which beautifully complements paintings by Rossetti, Burne-Jones, etc. Musically, they are familiar from Respighi's more famous works, though they are naturally more subdued and refined than the technicolor fireworks of the Roman Trilogy. I think they fit remarkably well alongside Chausson's Poeme, Vaughan-Williams' Lark Ascending, Delius' Violin Concerto, and even Walton's Violin Concerto. They are works of intense beauty and quiet dignity, channeling an "art for art's sake" world out of step with the tumult of the ealrier 20th century...and yet, they capture the true soul of the instrument.
The Poeme Autunale is the highlight of the disc: it is a true sister to Chausson's Poeme, but is less neurotic, sounding healthy and rapturous next to his more "hot house" lyricism. It opens with a melody that conjures up the world of his Botticelli Portraits, and then ushers in a haunting violin melody that dominates the piece--and its general mood. This is open plains, rolling gray clouds kind of music, contemplative, peaceful, and transcendent. A middle section becomes Scherzo-ish, with some rapid violin work, only to settle back into the ethereal calm of the opening. A major work that should be as popular as The Lark Ascending or Dvorak's Romance.
The Concerto Gregoriano is a full-fleged violin concerto, using "Gregorian" themes in a very Romantic fashion (you won't be aware of them). The quiet opening leads to a impassionated romantic theme which sounds a bit like film music (a wide shot of a mountainous region in summer, etc.). The rest of the movement cools down to long passasges of quiet yearning, much like the Poema. The same is true of the slow movement, which is typically beautiful in Respighi's contemplative manner. In the finale, however, we encounter a "heroic" theme that again conjures up what we now know as film music. The theme could become clumsy and gauche in the wrong hands, but here is sounds noble and spirited. Morkoviditch's playing is astounding here as always, and she makes the piece sing as few could accomplish. Beautiful support from the BBC Philharmonic and Downes throughout.
The surprise here is a work not for violin at all, but for orchestra alone, the Ballate delle Gnomidi, or Ballad of the Gnomes. The orchestration is astounding--this could easily be an outtake from The Festivals of Rome. The work glitters and glowers, full of a dark, Firebird-esque story that gradually unfolds for the listener. Why this isn't played more often is an enigma--it would be a wonderful curtain raiser for a symphony or concerto. Very exciting find--thanks to Downes and the BBC for rediscovering it!
This is easily one of the finest Respighi releases on disc, particularly as it features some of his least known works. Highly recommended if you are a fan of late Romantic repertoire! A nice companion disc is the Naxos disc of his piano concerto/concertante works (Toccata, Piano Concerto, and Fantasia Slava).
