Music Review: what? chinese salsa band? that's ridiculous!

i couldn't believe it at first when my co worker who is hispanic told me about a band called "la luz" whom she said were composed of chinese. i thought she was joking. i said "are you kidding me?" a chinese salsa band? and she said yes there is such a band and they are chinese and they are very good. i still thought she was joking. you see i have lots of cds of salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton, cumbia, samba, rumba, cha cha performed by real hispanic bands but i have never heard of chinese. i said to myself this is ridiculous, how can chinese sing spanish songs it would be pretty obvious i guess when you hear them sing. i looked for this band called "la luz" but they were not sold in common music stores and even in latin stores. i guess the hispanic stores would not patronize such ridiculous cd by chinese. but my hispanic friend said they're good or even better than hispanic bands and singers. i said give me a break will you. so i searched for this band but couldn't find it. but lo and behold, i finally found it on amazon and ebay but their name was not "la luz" the correct name so i found out was "orquesta de la luz". so i bought this cd entitled "lo esencial" on amazon and it blew my mind the first time i played it! i still could not believe that there is such a band from asia and they are not chinese as my friend said, they are to my greater amazement were japanese. the more it became ridiculous at the outset, what? a japanese salsa band? but this cd attests to the fact that an any culture or nationality for that matter can perform such kind of music genre and get away with it. the beat of this band is absolutely danceable to salsa no doubt about it. the horn section is superb and most especially the percussion is terrific. the lady singer sings spanish quite not exactly like a real latin lady singer but she is good for a japanese singer to sing spanish lyrics. her spanish renditions are better than her english song like "time after time" which are not clearly pronounced. overall this album is worth the price you pay for it. all the numbers in this album has been carefully selected and recorded and this is a job well done. i hope to see this band live in person or in dvd. but in the meantime anybody who dances the salsa will immediately leap from theis seats and grab their dancing partners and enjoy the pulsating music of this extraordinary asian band once they play this cd and that is what this cd is all about...dance to it, man.
