Music Review: A Disney Pop Musical That's Eactly What You'd Expect

If anyone ever told me I'd be reviewing the Original Cast Recording of Broadway's new "Tarzan" I would have told them I'd never listen to the thing. Wrong. I heard of few of the songs in a music store and was "slightly" intrigued. I got the CD at a bargain price, so I gave it a listen. Well, Phil Collins is no Steven Sondheim or Steven Schwartz. Still, this cast recording is no better (or worse) than "Beauty...", "Lion King", or "Aida". Phil Collins' work here is just as pop-professional as anything Elton John did, and just as maddeningly non-Broadway. This isn't traditional Broadway music, or even non-traditional. It's pop music with a grand production surrounding it (the opening sequence is reportedly the grandest since "The Lion King's" exquisite opening setpiece) with nothing challenging or original about it. Sounds like most of Broadway these days.
But...before you put away your Mastercards and write this one off there are a few things you should know. Josh Strickland, Jenn Gambatese and Chester Gregory II are a vocal triple-threat and each brings not only vocal expertise but passion and legit-Broadway singing to their performances (in such short supply today on the boards - sorry Georgia Engel). Highlights include Gregory's "Who Better Than Me," Gambatese's "Waiting for This Moment,", "Like No Man I've Ever Seen" and "Strangers Like Me." And of course, Josh Strickland proves his leading man potential from start to finish. His renditions of the galvanic "Different", "For the First Time" and "Everything That I Am" are passionate, vocally superb and emotional bulls eyes.
This production received one Tony nomination (for lighting) which is probably indicative of the backlash against the "Disney-iffication" of Broadway (much of which is deserved), but in a season in which "The Drowsy Chaperone" can win a Tony for best score and "The Wedding Singer" can be nominated, this seems lopsided at best. None of these scores are "one-for-the-ages" but "Tarzan" is no better or worse than either of these and it contains some stellar, stand-out performances.
One more thing, damned or not, these Disney musicals are bringing hordes of youngsters into the theater, which may lead to an audience for more sophisticated fare in years to come (of course, to take a family of five at top ticket prices means you'll have to re-mortgage your house). In any case, don't write "Tarzan" off as an empty Disney extravaganza. There are many talented people doing excellent work at the Richard Rogers Theatre eight times a week. Go check it out.
