Music reviews of Shrek: The Musical

Music Review: Defying Creativity
Rating: 2 Stars

"Shrek the Musical" is the latest cartoon-to-stage / children's fable knock-off to lumber into the world of musical theater. Like its predecessors "Tarzan", "Mary Poppins", "The Little Mermaid" and "Wicked", "Shrek" aims for the lowest common denominator at all costs and determinedly avoids anything but the obvious. That's not necessarily disastrous if creatively done (i.e., "Wicked"), but this score is simply pedestrian, crude and fatally undercooked. Composer Jeanine Tesori helped create what may be the best new score of the last twenty years with "Caroline, or Change" in 2004. Unfortunately, with "Shrek" she has produced a flaccid, homogenized work that is stylistically inconsistent (or a mess...you decide) and fails to achieve one memorable moment. The lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire are alternately clever or sloppy and, typical of this cartoon genre, so full of anachronisms and pop-culture references that much of the "ha-ha" joking will be incomprehensible to future generations. "I Think I Got You Beat" is the worst of the bunch, a character song based on the theme of flatulence. How inspired. In addition, references to "bipolar", "good cardio", "boy bands" and "pheromones" plant this score firmly in 2009 (or is it 1998), making this a musical of its time rather than a timeless musical. When Pinnochio defiantly screams out "I'm wood...I'm good...get used to it!" the attitude is all post-modern posturing and all wrong for the character. It's a thoroughly cheap laugh to boot but that's 21st century show-biz, I guess.

What's most unfortunate here is that some of Broadway's most talented singer-actors are forced to waste their prodigious abilities slumming through "Shrek's" dreck. Sutton Foster is a modern musical wonder and even she manages to find the goods in "Morning Person" and "I Know It's Today". Brian D'Arcy James has been toiling in lesser Broadway musicals for more than a decade but has proven himself a talent to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, here he gets to fart a lot and sing insipidly interchangeable ballads. Daniel Breaker burst onto the Broadway scene in the underappreciated "Passing Strange" in 2008 and he possesses an impressively fluid and powerful voice, which he gets to use here doing Barry White imitations and flirting with Steppin' Fetchit stereotypes...yikes! Even the always reliable Christopher Sieber is reduced (literally onstage, apparently) to over-the-top caricaturing that would be quite at home on Main Street USA in Disney World. Actors have to take the work that's available to them, yet it's inconceivable that in the years to come any of these able performers will look back on "Shrek" as a career pinnacle. What a waste.

Description of Shrek: The Musical

SHREK - the brand new musical comedy, adapted from Dreamworks blockbuster animated films, has knocked Broadway on its ear. Declared a "big fat hit" by USA Today, and "true happiness" by The New York Times, Shrek has a score and book by Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsey-Abaire (Rabbit Hole). Dreamworks Studios is the producer of the show and based it on the first chapter of the Shrek movie series. Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James stars as Shrek accompanied by the Tony Award winning actress Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona and Tony Award nominee Daniel Breaker as Donkey. Cast recordings don't get much better or bigger than SHREK - 30 actors in the cast and 27 musicians in the orchestra.
