Music Review: It's definitely worth a listen--I regret not hearing it sooner.

My girlfriend scored this CD in a small contest at school. I took a look at the cover and expected a seriously contrived album, and I even made a scathing joke.
To my surprise, the songs are soothing and deep. In fact, it's actually good. The sounds range from the ethereal breaks reminiscent of electronic world music of the 90s to atmospheric drum and bass. You can hear some house influence as some of the songs are that strict 4/4-Boom-TAT-Boom-TAT rhythm. The only aspect of opera is an operatic vocal style prevalent through the album. I've heard this result in utter disaster, but this album seems to have a more sophisticated and patient approach. Each song takes its own personality as opposed to being the same beat, same structure, etc.
What I like most about this album is that the songs are generally unpredictable and set or resonate a chilled mood. It's one of those rainy day, in for the night, goodbye summer, or watching the city lights, kind of CDs.
My only complaint is probably one of personal preference. I'm not a fan of songs fading out (especially when vocals fade out). Most media players can fade a song for you. Also, since I like to put songs in personal, 10-copy DJ mixes, it makes the tasks of placing a song into the arrangement and working with it much harder.
I read some of the negative reviews of this album, and I think their opinions come from an expectation of the way it should be----the way it should sound. The way something should sound is based on what they expect to hear, and if they expect to hear opera and judge it as if they are listening to opera, then it's no surprise that they are dissatisfied. That's not the music's fault at all. You can do that to any good album you can think of and wind up with pretty dismal results unless it's an opera (or the way it should be).
In conclusion, it's about as corny as I expected, but it is much better than I expected. four stars.
