Music reviews of Open MindMusic Review: Consistent album that rewards further listening. 73.5/100 Rating: 4 Stars
This is an obscure album I wouldn't ordinarily have come across. Last year I bought a Classic Rock magazine special on the alternative history of heavy metal, and a song from this album (Magic potion) made the list. Did come across some positive comments on this album so I took a punt in buying it. On first listen only 3 songs really seemed noteworthy, but when I listened to it 2 or 3 days later I found more songs which sort of stuck out a bit more. The cd has some good liner notes, like the factoid that Paul McCartney did not like this band! Also amusing is the band info...it reads like a match making service! Sound quality is excellent on this 2006 release. Lyrics can be psychedelic and fantasy orientated. Musically, it has a consistent tone, of the 1960s variety. Some connections I made listening to this: has Herman's Hermits type singing; musically, you can hear touches like "The lion sleeps tonight" or "You really got me". Anyway, on first listen I was looking at giving this album around 65+/100 but now I'd say around 73.5/100.
The best songs:
Magic potion - does have a heavy metal vibe to it, with the drum and guitar sound. You could think of it as an energised "I wanna be your dog" or as being vaguely Black Sabbathy in quality. Bass guitar plays the riff to "You really got me", I think. One time you hear interesting sound tone to the guitar. Cool outro where the drums get speedy. Best song on first listen. A bonus track, not on the original release of this album (album has four bonus tracks).
I feel the same way too - has a hippie/San Francisco vibe to it. Features catchy female vocals (chorus is good in this song too). Falsetto vocals kick off the song. This song could have been great, I think, if the verses from the previous song (Try another day) had been spliced with the chorus from this song. You can hear vinyl type clicks on this song, but that was cool. It took a second listen to appreciate this song more...as for all the other songs in this section, below.
Before my time - has a good, sort of gothic western vibe to it...a bit Nick Cavey, if you will. A bassy track with fantasy lyrics. Lead guitar seems to play a variation on "The lion sleeps tonight" melody. Experimental, instrumental sounds close the track.
My mind cries - deep piano notes provide the hook and riff for this song. Has psychedelic related lyrics. Like the drum outro. Vocals employ long vowels.
Can't you see - intro has a sleepy pace with country flavoured guitar. A moody song with backing vocals and more long vowel sounds. Like the note picking on bass. At times the vocals have an Indian flavour to them.
Next best songs (on second listen):
Thor the thunder god - like Led Zeppelin, you get some pagan lyrics in this song. Has jingle jangle guitars. More long vowels. Broody track at times. Lead guitar features.
Horses and chariots - notable for the drumming...has a good drum intro. Catchy, with a sing-along-able chorus. Staccato singing and fantasy/psychedelic lyrics.
Free as the breeze - another track notable for the drumming...in this case, the tribal rhythm at the intro. The outro has tough sounding drumming. Also found the lead guitar in this song to utilise the melody from "The lion sleeps tonight" but more obscurely, this time. Did find one vocal element to this song familiar but I can't pinpoint it. Sing-along-able vocal re "Ba ba ba ba" part.
Girl I'm so alone - catchy chorus. References "You really got me" obviously, as well as subtly with a toned down, milder version of the classic riff. Has a long lead guitar solo. You can hear vinyl type clicks on this song but that was ok by me, again.
Soul and my will - has a 1960s vibe...sort of like The Byrds, maybe. Some of the note picking on the guitar brought to mind the latter band, Pixies. Rhythm guitar sometimes had a "Proud Mary" vibe going on...you could view this song as a splicing of Pixies + Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Falling again - found the part with lyrics "Do I love her? Do I want her? I think I do" catchy, but so were the verses too. Track has drum fills, including the outro. One of the tracks which give this album a consistent feel.
The next best song (on second listen):
Cast a spell - has a grating, hard rock guitar sound and psychedelic lyrics. Chorus a little catchy but the sound quality gives the song a certain distance from the listener.
The rest:
Dear Louie - has backing vocals and the lyrics are easy to pick up. Lead guitar plays on this first track one of numerous "Lion sleeps tonight" type melodies.
Try another day - vocals are dominant on the left hand side of the speakers. I like the verses on this song, which has interesting and sort of catchy singing. The chorus, with backing singing, isn't so catchy.
Day and night - a reworked version of "Girl I'm so alone", as the liner notes explain. A bonus track. Has some lyrical overlap to the song on the original album, but this sounds more rock and has some whiny lead guitar. This version does not share lyrics from the title of "Girl I'm so alone" but that song does not have the backing vocals featured here, in "Day and night".
Get out of my way - final bonus track and album closer. Harmonies utilised and the guitar sounds slightly out of tune (not that I'd know!) Sort of catchy track with interesting lyrics...about spurning a would be girlfriend, I think.
Recommendations (psychedelic):
The Jimi Hendrix Experience (especially his 1st and 3rd albums)
The Beatles - Magical mystery tour
Cream - Wheels of fire
Twink - Think pink
