Music reviews of Olliet Records Story

Music Review: THE OLLIET RECORDS STORY
Rating: 4 Stars

Two discs 76 minutes each approximately. The sound is good and has a warmth that is very agreeable. This is another small label based on the west coast from about 1945 to 1956. Companion sets (all on Acrobat records) would be BOB GEDDINS BIG TOWN RECORDS STORY and THE TRILON RECORDS STORY. Together these three collections give a good overview of music from the 1940's and 1950's that was being produced by small record labels on the west coast.
This collection has a number of interesting tracks, being the first records by Charles Mingus (under the names Charles "Barron" Mingus and Baron Mingus) and early sides by Percy Mayfield. Also included are tracks by Lowell Fulson and several gospel groups. Mixed in are sides by quite a few mostly unknown (at least nationally) r&b singers and bands. Mention has to be made of the first track in this collection-Lafayette Thomas' "The Thing"-a guitar workout that still sounds good today. Also interspersed throughout are several sermons/songs which help give a better view of what was being recorded during this time. Don't think that these are time wasters-they are very intense and atmospheric(almost scary) and stand alongside the other tracks as equals.
The booklet is up to the usual high standards of Acrobat Records-with information about the label owners (in this case not much is known about Ollie Hunt) and a number of the performers on these two discs. Anyone with an interest in this era of music, especially from the west coast, would be wise to pick this up,along with the other previously mentioned sets. Together they form a good picture of music put out by these small labels, labels that didn't last but a brief time. The individualism shown by these people (both label owners and performers) is now something of an anachronism. This is music that will never pass our way again. Pick it up before these collections, too, are gone.
