Music Review: Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Lady

I've always liked Olivia's sweet voice and have several of her albums so when I saw that this live performance had been produced by DTS Entertainment, I jumped on it.
This disc has multiple play modes:
1) DTS track for discrete 5.1 channel sound for which a DTS decoder is required.
2) Dolby Digital 5.1 that will play in any DVD player (even in the car!)
3) DVD-Audio track that produces a high-definition audio experience. The DVD-Audio track is recorded in MPL lossless 5.1 surround which requires a DVD-Audio compatible player. While the package does not state the sampling frequency used in this rendition, the norm for DVD-Audio is 96 kHz as opposed to 44.1 kHz for a standard CD. This disc gets 5 stars just for the technical execution.
Olivia is brilliant as always with her vocals in extraordinary shape. In this concert she performed a great variety of her best-loved songs and even included a couple from the Grease soundtrack.
A wonderful addition to any audiophile's collection and highly recommended.

Released to coincide with Australia's best-selling pop diva's performance at the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, this is a live album featuring 21 of her greatest hits recorded during her recent American tour. Packed with smashes, it includes 'Xanadu', 'Magic', 'Have You Never Been Mellow?', 'You're The One That I Want', 'Hopelessly Devoted To You', 'Summer Nights', 'If You Love Me', 'Let's Get Physical' and 'I Honestly Love You'. Recorded live at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ on August 26 & 27, 1999. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.Having used her own modern travails to reorder both her personal priorities and music, Olivia Newton-John seems to have largely cast off the breathy sex-kitten image that haunted her career. But this live album (recorded at Atlantic City's Taj Mahal showroom in 1999) shows she's lost none of her commercial and artistic acumen in the bargain. Neatly interweaving songs from Gaia (the '94 album that chronicles her quasi-spiritual rebirth) and her Nashville outing, Back with a Heart, with a generous slate of hits, the singer deftly casts it all in an aura of uplifting hope with her brief comments between songs. As on-stage shtick, it's oddly not so different from the Rev. Al Green's latter-day tack--and often as effective. Songs like "Xanadu" and "Magic" slide surprisingly well into the mold, even if the numbers from Grease and Let's Get Physical remain obvious crowd pleasers. Newton-John's voice seems much stronger throughout than in her media icon years, backed by an eight-piece band that delivers it all flawlessly. --Jerry McCulley
