Music Review: PLEASE SIR, I WANT SOME 5 Stars
.....but do we? There have been countless cast recordings of "Oliver", plus the movie soundtrack and this latest 2009 London cast recording is a fine addition to the Oliver library but is it necessary? Yes and no.The cast are mostly unknowns(over here) with the exception of Rowan Atkinson(Mr Bean). Mr Atkinson is not the best of singers but blessedly he avoids the "borscht belt comic" schtick of Fagin. Jodie Prenger as Nancy sings the shows' big number, "As Long As He Needs Me" well but the spectre of Georgia Brown hangs over her and the spectre wins. The young actors playing Oliver and the Artful Dodger do a good job but the Artful Dodger has a bit of strange vocals during "Consider Yourself" but I am guessing he is at the stage of a young mans' life when the voice is changing. Oliver has the shows most unfortunate song, "Where is Love". I realize in the context of the show he is longing for a mother figure to care for and love him but on a recording taking the lyrics at face value it sounds like a ten year old boy looking for a girlfriend.
This new recording has a large orchestra, new arrangements, and a cast of 80(count 'em) 80. I did. 80 is correct. And the scenic design is lavish and fantastic.
The only drawback is the recording is live so there is the audience clapping at the end of every number and sometimes the applauding drowns out the last few notes of the songs. Not a major drawback-just annoying.
This production is a labor of love for Cameron MacIntosh who has been associated with "Oliver" for more than 40 years and even if this show ran for 40 years it would never be a financial success what with the salaries alone for the cast and orchestra would gobble up a huge chunk of the weekly box-office receipts, not to mention salaries for the stagehands, production team, agents, lawyers, theatre rental and royalties to the artists who wrote, staged designed and choreographed.
The bottom line then is, is this recording necessary to add to your CD library? The answer is still yes and no, but I am glad I purchased it, although my personal preference is the movie soundrack.
Over-all the CD is excellent with the exception of the clap-happy audience.
