Stars Too Small to Use is one of the rawest and most immediate records I have ever heard. From the punk-rockers-with-acoustic-guitars energy of the opener, "Kathy Keller," to the visceral harmonies and cerebral lyrics of "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion," Okkervil River open their hearts, minds and basement doors with songs exploring darkness and loss in beautiful ways. Largely just acoustic guitar, bass and drums, with rough harmonies and frequent, pained shouting in the background, this is a simply produced and powerful album that should appeal not only to alt-country, folk, and indie fans in general, but anyone who likes smart songs and sincere music played with passion and abandon.
