Music Review: Offenbach and Gounod with Sparkle and Drama

When one is considering which of the many recordings available will best capture the joy and happiness of Gaite Parisienne or the drama of Gounod's ballet music to Faust this rendition by Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra should definitely be on the list.

I have owned this recording for several years and when I noticed that no one had reviewed it I felt obligated to speak up in its behalf. Dutoit conducts the selections by Offenbach with a lively sparkle that has evoked a toe-tapping response from me for years. I have absolutely no ability or talent as a dancer but if I did, this is the kind of music to which I would want to dance.

Gounod added the ballet music to the opera as a necessity for performance in Paris at the Paris Opera; although the opera premiered in 1859, the ballet music was not added until 1869 as a condition of its presentation at the Paris Opera.

The ballet music has developed a life of its own as a concert piece; it has moments of beauty and great power. Today opera companies are somewhat divided as to whether or not the ballet music should be included. From the point of view of the story, it does intrude and delay the stories progress; from another point of view it can display the depravity of Mephistopheles.

For this recording we need not further consider the impact of the music on the opera; suffice it to say the music has drama and power and serves well in concert.

This is a recording that will not disappoint; the audio is excellent as is the soundstage it creates. During this period London recordings were technically superior and still reflect that quality on a good sound system today.
