Music Review: zero polish

Vince is enjoying ameteur hour here. Zoom in on the album cover! He is looking ultra-zonked. He does not have to care! These are very personal tracks. Some are too personal. "You're A Good Sport, Charlie Brown"? No thanks! Even vintage drum machines are not enough to make this cut appreciable. However, this album is really nice. It is not "From All Sides" and is not a contiguous live recording. There are some live cuts on here in the style (yet finer) than early 70's Hawes. Vince's Rhodes, the snare and the toneless electric jazz bass concoct a polite fizz in combination with the vibratin' snare wires, like all the coolest live boots. Oaxaca is in the earlier style, and the second version is just incredible. The Beatles' and Williams' cuts are the other highlights! I suggest to anyone still living in 1993 to sample these right away. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" sums up this release. Vince seems stoned or uncaring. It's super-dope though, with that hilarious left-to-right with the wah clavinet. What's he thinking?? It's just grooving!

Get set for a treat: This is Dr. Funk like you've never before heard him. During the later part of his career, Vince performed almost exclusively on the Fender Rhodes, but very little of this fabulous material ever saw retail exposure.Together with his combo - Vince Denham, sax; Koji, bass; and Mike Clark, drums - Vince Guaraldi takes us on a decidedly funk-inspired journey. The album includes two Peanuts songs making their CD debut, interpretations of two classic Beatles numbers, the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want," and more. The anchor for this project, though, is Guaraldi's catchy, whimsical original, "Oaxaca."
