Music reviews of Dig out Your Soul

Music Review: I am going to break out of the Oasis mold
Rating: 1 Stars

Let me first say that in the past I would eat, sleep and breath Oasis. I would still feel this way about the band if I had not long ago "worn out the grooves" (Brian Wilson terminology) of Oasis's great early songs and the scattering of good songs off of their later albums. The following is a review of "Dig Out Your Soul" and general thoughts I have on the band.

Dig Out Your Soul is an OK album. But Oasis's relentless self promotion would cause one to expect something more. I think that Oasis's previous album, "Don't Believe the Truth" was a sort of return to form. A few of the songs off that album were truly great Oasis songs. But there are no real stand out songs on Dig Out Your Soul. A couple of good songs in the beginning, one good song later in the album, and that's it. The best songs I would say are "The Turning" and "Ain't Got Nothin." Regardless of what you think about the songwriting technique on those two songs, they do nevertheless carry the Oasis swagger. I thought "The Shock of the Lightening" was another weak opening single, similar in quality to opening singles such as "D'You Know What I Mean?," "Go Let It Out," and "The Hindu Times." "Falling Down" is a bore. While "I'm Outta Time," has some pretty parts to it, in general it is just an average song. While I don't hate the respective Gem and Andy songs "To Be Where There's Life," and "The Nature of Reality," I don't exactly love them either. "Soldier On" is an inappropriately downbeat song to end the album with. In general, with the exception of the two decent songs I mentioned before, the rest of Dig Out Your Soul is pretty much forgettable.

While this isn't exactly a scathing review, I non-the-less believe this album deserves one star. Why?...What is it we expect of Oasis? The answer is that one would expect Oasis to live up to the hype they constantly lavish upon themselves. What bothers me is that they sort of sit like tyrannical despots on their rock and roll throne, brutally berating every band that comes along. This is unforgivable given the fact that their own music, as of late, is lukewarm at best.

What made Britpop so brilliant was the magic, vigor and newness of it. It made me think that it was still possible for great things to happen in a jaded grunge music type of world. Oasis's swagger helped fuel the Britpop era and helped to put a swagger back in the step of many a fan. But Oasis's failure with "Be Here Now" helped to bring that era to a close. And over the ensuing years Oasis's berating of other bands is part of the reason that a new Britpop era hasn't emerged.

While Oasis's ascendancy to the top was justified, the band's perceived continued position there is not. Oasis is guarding it's perceived spot at the top by all means necessary. It can be argued that they sort of con people into believing in their greatness..as usual Noel has talked up Dig Out Your Soul, just as he has done with every other lukewarm Oasis album.. and over the years while doing this, they meanwhile berate and belittle other musicians. They do these things at the cost of innovation and newness in the British rock scene in general. I would say they scare emerging indie bands away and scare fans away from supporting emerging indie bands. How does Oasis do this? They still dominate popular British music magazines such as NME, MOJO, etc., so their voice and opinions still carry weight.

How has Oasis dominated music magazines despite producing several lukewarm albums? Despite their under performing music, they have managed to keep a powerful image. They look good on magazines covers and can give interesting interviews. Despite coming out with songs like "Little by Little" they have managed to look and act cooler than any other band around. Perhaps this is an art in itself and an area where Oasis has always excelled. But as Noel likes to say, "it's about the music." However, at times the band can easily be perceived to be style over substance.

At this point in time, given the lukewarm quality of Dig Out Your Soul, I think it is safe to say that Damon Albarn has, in the long run, won the Oasis/Blur battle. He has consistently put out interesting quality material, keeping a lower profile than Oasis, but non-the-less creating excellent music. Not to mention that Grahm Coxon, for example in his album "Happiness in Magazines," created something with far more freshness and energy than can be found in Oasis albums such as Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and Heathen Chemistry.

As a redemption to the effort of Dig Out Your Soul, I for one hope to see a future solo Liam Gallagher effort, or a Liam dominated Oasis album. I think the real problem with the band, (and with Dig Out Your Soul,) is Noel's lack of inspiration. (Noel is too busy feeling pleased with himself and has lost his hunger.) Liam still has inspiration, has a sizable back-catalog of unreleased songs, and I bet that if an albums worth of Liam material was released, Oasis music would at least sound interesting again. Liam's voice often sounds like it has gone. But I believe he can always sing his own material extremely well. True there are a few rather average Liam penned songs on Dig Out Your Soul, like "I'm Outta Time" and "Soldier On." However, recent Liam penned songs such as "Songbird," and "Born On A Different Cloud," are really the only bright spots on Heathen Chemistry. "Meaning of Soul" was one of the best songs on Don't Believe the Truth. I have also been impressed with recent Liam penned B sides/bonus tracks like "Eyeball Tickler" and "I Believe in All." True Noel has penned some recent good songs like "Mucky Fingers," "The Turning" and "Lord Don't Slow Me Down." But I think that as a whole the majority of the freshness and vitality of the band is coming from Liam's songs.

Let Liam pen the majority of the next album's songs, let Noel contribute 2 good ones and let Andy and Gem contribute only if they have something really good like "Turn up the Sun."

Another problem the band obviously has is the strain between Liam and Noel; they apparently no longer spend time with one another off stage. I think it is likely they have trouble working together in the studio, (as was perhaps the case with Dig Out Your Soul,) and thus the band's collaborative effort is weakened. Also, I think the band has a bit of disregard for its fans. I do not think they feel any obligation to please their fan base. And although this attitude is perhaps part of Oasis's charm, I would also say it is one of the reasons that the band can't be arsed to work hard in the studio to create another great album.

I have pretty much given up on expecting anything memorable from this band. The previous album "Don't Believe The Truth" got my hopes up, but I was disappointed once again since hearing Dig Out Your Soul. For some, Oasis's overblown egos, powerful style and image and current lukewarm music might be enough. Others may have recently discovered Oasis, and are for the first time marveling at the band's unusual combination of characteristics. For me it is no longer enough. Don't get me wrong. I would be extremely happy to hear another great Oasis album. But in the meantime, I for one am going to break out of the Oasis mold and will be looking for a new British Rock paradigm to emerge.
