Music reviews of O2Music Review: Ok. . Here's the REAL deal about this CD Rating: 3 Stars
All right. I've read through some of these reviews and many of them just seem kind of cheezy and unreliable. (Basically, they seem to all be written by little girls). I'm just saying, if you want an honest and real opinion about the music on this CD from a real musician, keep reading. When O-Town came out the first time, i have to admit i was watching with the rest of the world. This kind of stuff is interesting and good entertainment at that. My personal music tastes range from A to Z - You name it, i've probably got the CD. Anyway, O-Town's first CD was clearly a basic pop record that I enjoyed. Standouts for me were Sensitive, Shy Girl, Love should be a crime, and We fit together. However, like most pop records, it had its cheeziness but overall a good CD. This new one definitely puts them in a new category but as many have expressed, we don't know exactly which one! There is a great diversity of music on this record. Overall i give it about 3 stars. It has some really great tracks along with some really cheezy ones. The guys definitely practiced their writing skills, some of which were better than others. Ashley Angel's songs "From the Damage", "Craving", and "Suddenly" (my favorite tracks) are clearly the best. They have an edge to them that is not the typical O-town sound and the lyrics are clearly better than those of the other tracks. He definitely shines on this record and dare i say outshines others like JC Chasez and Jennifer Love Hewitt by far. Personally, I think Ashley's rockier tracks (no doubt comparable to the sound of one of my personal favorites The Goo Goo Dolls) are the best of the CD. Like others of you have expressed, I too wonder why "American Game" and "Deathwish" did not appear on the album. In concert, these songs stood out to me as it did to many of you. Those would have been great songs on the album that may have persuaded me to give it 4 stars. The Music on this CD is excellent. The lyrics are where the album falters. If one was available, i would buy a CD of just the instrumental music from this album. Songs like "Over Easy" and "These are the Days" have a different sound but are overall enjoyable (basic pop with some new stuff added). I don't think "These are the Days" was the best choice for the lead single. Although it seems to be the logical one. Its new and different but not too new for their original fan base. "Days"'s lyrics could improve some also. . contains some cheezy overused pop phrases. The Hip-Hop/R&B sounding tracks like "Favorite Girl" and "Girl Like That" have decent beats but again the Lyrics just aren't that great. Slightly better, "I only dance with you" has an excellent beat (similar to something Usher sounding) but the lyrics leave me lost. Same with "Been Around the World." Each of these has their good lines and stories but to me they just aren't expressed the best way. Although to some appealing, to me its just not the best they can do. Again the music outshines the lyrics. "Make her say" is very interesting (sounds very Nelly-like). I actually like this track. Its just one of those great party songs. A great concert opening song. The pop fans will like this one alot! "You can't Lose Me" is a basic pop track also. Pop fans will like this one as well. The lyrics to this one are very sweet and sincere (Basic Boyband material). Good way to end the record. The only ballad "I Showed her" is a great pop ballad and will most likely be a single. It easily could be called The Return of "All or Nothing" but better. I love the piano, which goes great with Erik and Dan's vocals. Speaking of vocals, simply my opinion, but i believe that Dan, Erik, and Ashley should work together just themselves. Ashley is clearly a born musician with great talents and Erik and Dan clearly have the strongest vocals and can write great beats. As for Jacob and Trevor, again my opinion, i'm just not feeling the music that they're bringing to the table. (Not to mention in the show, both of them just got on my nerves - of course so did the whole Ashley/Shelly drama - I think he can do better that her!) As for Clive Davis, the man certainly knows alot about the music business so i wouldn't be dogging on him. The Business makes mistakes but overall, we all know that this man pretty much knows what he's talking about. Improvement? I believe anyone can improve in whatever they do (Especially in music). For the guys, overall a great record. You can't really compare it to the first because of the different sounds (I'm actually going to make an O-town mix with my favorite songs, leaving out the cheezy ones). My advice for O-Town, better lyrics which hopefully will come with growing as musicians. (Note to Ashley: I like your stuff alot. Keep it up) I can't wait to see what the guys put out next. Hope this review was helpful to all of you - but its just my opinion.

The group's debut was a frothy confection of slick dance-pop hits that sold 2 million copies. With two hard years of touring under their belts, group members have stayed together and moved into a house in Santa Monica, California, where they cowrote six of the songs on their second offering and enlisted one of rap's royalty to work with them. Nelly cowrote and produced "Favorite Girl" and adds his trademark vocals to "Make Her Say." Since leaving the world of TV, O-Town has moved away from their boy-band beginnings. Switching from hip-hop to dance to pop, they sometimes come across as a band in search of a sound. But O-Town's collective heart really seems to be in guitar-driven rock. They give Bon Jovi a run for their money on the rather overwrought "These Days," while "From the Damage" could have been lifted off a Goo Goo Dolls disc. O-Town is a band in transition, but give them credit for taking over the reins of their career. Maybe by the next album, they'll figure out what they want to be now that they've grown up. --Jaan Uhelszki
