i first heard of o.a.r. because a group of my friends were going during summer break from college. they all loved them and raved that they were "the next big thing" and "musical geniuses"so my first exposure to them was in one of their "amazing" live performances.
frankly, i can't recall a professional live band i've heard that put on a worse show.
they really were just boring.
the problem is they really want to be a "jam" band, you know the type who go off at the end of their songs and improv for like half an hour.
unfortunately, these guys aren't talented. their progressions are some of the most basic i've heard. so imaigne the same three chords repeated endless in the same manner for 20 or so minutes.
the bassist, also, i honestly believe knows only one fill. this is speaking as an accomplished bassist who is in a decent band. so repetitive guitar, and ONE BASS LINE over and over again for 20 minutes does NOT a good performance make.
but whatever, i'll see anyone in concert, and so i had a decent time. mainly making fun of o.a.r.'s frontman as he constantly tried to retune his guitar by ear and failed (causing him to have to stop in the middle of playing sometimes cuz he was so out of tune)
anyway, my friends thought it was the most orgasmic experience of their lives, i don't know why, and so they continued to want to listen to them ALL THE TIME.
so that is how i got exposed to o.a.r.'s recorded music.
it is a little less boring than their live performance because the songs don't go on forever, however, the progressions are all just as basic, and the bass is just as boring.
the lyrics are contrived and trite, without any real meaning, and the vocal work is... poor at best.
so all in all, if you want to be a cool teeny bopper goes to college and gets "deep" fill up your cd collection with these guys and dave mathew's. then you can be awesome, and by awesome i mean TOTALLY SWEET.
(not saying anything against dmb, i think it is filled with really good musicians, as opposed to o.a.r., i just think they have a tendency to way overplay... but at least they have the ability to do it)
