Music Review: Egregious oatmeal

I ran across a used copy of "In Between Now & Then" and figured I would give it a listen. I had heard of OAR, but never heard OAR. Initially, I thought this is pretty cool when I cranked the track Dareh Meyod, which sounded fresh and interesting.
But on to the next track, fast forward, the next song, fast forward, the next song, fast forward and so on. I figured I was just tired, so I gave this recording another audition while during my morning drive. And after Dareh Meyod, on to the next track, fast forward, the next song, fast forward, the next song, fast forward and so on.
The music struck me as very formulaic, middle of the road, and safe---sort of like a dish of oatmeal. Pretty much every song except Dareh Meyod sounds the same, just a bit of different window dressing or flavoring (whether one adds brown sugar, honey, molasses or yogurt, milk, or fruit, the main flavor is still oatmeal).
I thought I would focus a bit on the lyrics, a poor decision. There are many egregious examples but the contorted twisted lyrics in Whose Chariot? are easily some of the most unnatural language I've heard in quite a bit.
Clearly, I'm not in the in crowd here, but I have to call 'em like I hear 'em.
