Music Reviews of Not Too Late

Music Review: Too Country-Folk, Not Enough Classy Jazz
Rating: 2 Stars

I am a huge fan of Norah's voice and talents. I enjoy her COME AWAY WITH ME disc so much that I've nearly worn out my CD listening to it.

I purchased her second disc, FEELS LIKE HOME, the day it was released, and didn't particularly like the direction it took. I only ended up listening to it once, having come to expect more of a jazzy sound that you wouldn't feel uncomfortable listening to in even the most upscale urban setting. I felt that perhaps FEELS LIKE HOME was just a one-off, and looked forward to her next release.

The newest release, NOT TOO LATE, is even more bizarre than the last one. It is far too country-folk, with some very strange instruments, whistling, and even some outlandishly strange quirks. I would, regretably, feel almost embarrassed to play this disc in front of others.

If you enjoyed Norah's jazzy sound, be wary, as it is almost entirely absent from the new disc. My best advice to my greatly-beloved and highly-talented singer-songwriter is to move back toward her jazzier roots. Remember pieces like, COME AWAY WITH ME and DON'T KNOW WHY, and move back closer to that direction.

Music Review: won't play on computer ....
Rating: 1 Stars

Apparently, some anti-theft feature?? My computer reports "illegal number of tracks" and doesn't recognize there's a cd in the drive. Hopefully, I can return mine to Target since I listen to most music on my computer and don't want to support super-proctective artists anyway - if I pay $$ for someone's CD, then I should be able to listen to it in any player I choose. If artists belive their work is so precious, don't release it to the public!

CD jacket design very poor - who wants to struggle getting the book back in its sleeve? Quality control apparently poor too - my package had two cds, both of which were a little scuffed up on the bottoms.

I'm hoping there's at least one decent song up here - listening to it on a portable player ... so far, there hasn't been anything that hooked my attention and made me want to listen to the entire song. Wish I'd read more of the "boring" reviews up here before buying. Shame to waste such a great voice on uninteresting lyrics!

(I should note, the CD plays ok on our Windows computers at work but I have Debian at home, so that doesn't help me very much.)

Music Review: grown up
Rating: 4 Stars

It is only now, after I heard "Not too late" a few times, that I can write this review. It wasn't easy, falling inlove with this one, but she got me in the end.

"Come away with me" was a beautiful debut, presenting an upcoming, enormously gifted singer-songwriter, who was also humble (and a little bit shy) (which added to her charm). "Feels like home" suffered from the second album syndrome: It had its' gems, but it tried too much to duplicate the debut's success. This third album has a different aproach: Norah Jones takes on the role of a spokesperson of an entire generation of southern women living in the USA : a woman's love and loneliness in times of war in "Wish I could", "Thinking about you", and even a critical look on the election system on "My dear country". Even simple love songs like "Be my somebody" and "Little room" sound more grown up (one of them includes the line : "Last night was a record to be broken. It broke all over the kitchen floor" ). It feels great when someone is growing up with you. This beautiful little girl is now a woman. Listening to "Not too late" is growing up with her.

Music Review: More Great Music!
Rating: 5 Stars

Norah Jones has done it again. If she's not a music legend now, she is quickly becoming one. This CD was produced very well. Even the graphic design of the CD package is worth having just for the creative beauty of it. As on previous albums, she incorporates different sounds (instruments) for the songs, even whistling on one, making for a great variety and distinct feeling for each track. All the lovers of her CD, "Come Away With Me," who I find are mostly female, will no doubt appreciate tracks one, twelve, and thirteen. Track two is a fun offering that could be called a "drinking song." The "plucked" and legato cello on number seven will cause you to quickly learn and subsequently hum the melody after listening just once. Also, on the same track are Norah's vocal harmonies that are always comforting. If you're even a small fan of Norah's, you've got to have this CD. The hardcore enthusiasts will not be disappointed. For the female that told me "Come Away With Me" was a `bubble bath" CD, buy another bottle of soap...you're going to need it. (Be sure to get "Feels Like Home" if you don't have it already.)

Music Review: Afraid to take chances.
Rating: 4 Stars

Norah Jones isn't a belter, never will be. But what she brings to her music is a quiet assurance of "been there - done that" kinda living and vocal styling. It can get lost, as with her uneven second countrified CD and it can be boring and un-adventureous like with this CD. But when she does the CD is just amazing to listen to. "Wish I Could" tells the story of a fallen solider that Jones may have had an affair with, the quiet simmer of her vocals underlies the painful lyrics. "Sinkin' Soon" seems to talk about the aftermath of Katrina and along with the depth of "Broken" with its cello and bass, Jones seems to be reaching for something bigger.

This new disc, doesn't offer that lounge type feel of her first disc, its leaps and bounds below that in terms of quality. But what makes the difference here is that Jones is going after songwriting. The hardest thing for an artist to master. She's no Lucinda Williams or Patry Griffin, though. And the music suffers for it. She seems to have something to say, but is afraid of alienating her fanbase. And that in itself is boring.
