Music Review: A Fascinating Listening Experience

What I expected to hear when I received this CD was something like an Enya recording: fun at first hearing but soon to wear out its welcome. Instead, what I heard was a rich, deep, and rewarding recording both musically and sonically. Singer N?ir?n N? Riain is accompanied on many of the cuts by the Paul Winter Consort, the result being a complex blend of instruments with a warm overall sonority that is undergirded in places by bass frequencies that really plumb the depths. The songs are an interesting mix of Celtic and Oriental, with texts and notes provided. In all, listening to this CD is a fascinating experience, and I recommend it quite highly.

Noirin Ni Riain transforms the centuries-old Celtic sean nos singing style into a contemporary expression of beauty and completeness. These lovely and haunting songs, sung in a shining, clear soprano with an unmatched purity of tone, cannot fail to move listeners.Noirin Ni Riain (Noreen O'Ryan in Anglicized versions) is a legendary sean nos (traditional a cappella) singer in Ireland, but on this project her keening, clear-as-a-bell soprano is backed by America's pastoral-jazz ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, and such special guests as Joanie Madden and Jerry O'Sullivan. Nine traditional sean nos songs are sung in Gaelic; two Indian hymns are sung in Hindi, and a delightful arrangement of William Butler Yeats' "Down by the Sally Gardens" is sung in English. Winter's arrangements emphasize elongated phrasing and sustained notes, and the near-droning effect creates a spiritual stillness not unlike that produced by the chanting monks who were all the rage a few years ago. --Geoffrey Himes
