Music Reviews of Rock Steady

Music Review: Great CD
Rating: 4 Stars

I really got into No Doubt when this CD came out. I had never heard of No Doubt after I heard this CD. The songs are all great and the music videos are awesome! I'll rate each song.

Intro won't rate it. It's not a real song. still cool.

Hella Good=5\5 Love this song. Great beat, great sound, great video!

Hey Baby=4.5\5 This song was overplayed, but I still like it.

Making out=4\5 When I heard this song, it was my favorite on the album. Then it got kinda old.

Underneath it all=5\5 I used to not like this song, but now I like it. Unforgettable.

Detective=5\5 Love the old school detective tunes.

Don't let me Down=5\5 The tune at the beginning sounds like the tune on the lego commercials. Love it.

Start the Fire=5\5 I love this one. It's very combat-army like song.

Running=5\5 I used to hate this song. Then it grew on me and I love it!

In my Head=4.5\5 This one is a bit depressing, but I still like it. There is a gun shot at the end.

Platinum Blonde Life=4.5\5 A more pop\rock song. Love this one.

Waiting Room=3.5\5 The weakest on the album. I mean it has Prince, you can't go wrong with prince, but it seems like a filler.

Rock Staedy=10\5 The best song on the album, along with Start the Fire and Hella Good. Has very tropical beats and noises.Has a great vibe. So dreamy.

This album is not a good as Return of Saturn (Ithink ROS is their best album) But still great. For the people who think No Doubt sold out, GET A GRIP! They are just trying out different sounds and vibes. I think that is a good thing for a band to do. Otherwise, people would get tired of them. Remeber Return of Saturn? They changed, but not by a lot. Then they went from ROS to Rock Steady and changed and it sounded good. If you don't like Rock Steady, fine but understand that maybe some artists and bands want to try out different stuff. That way we can tell each album apart. And I give ND creditfor that.

Music Review: Torn . . .
Rating: 4 Stars

. . . I am torn as to how I should rate this album. I am such a die-hard fan of No Doubt, and especially Gwen, that it is hard for me to say anything negative about them.

But if you listen to the music and haunting lyrics of "Tragic Kingdom," and to a lesser extent, "Return of Saturn," this album just isn't the same No Doubt.

The band decided to "go Jamaican" in this album, and for the most part it worked, but after listening to this album over and over again since I got it, I have to say it doesn't have the same magic that their past albums have had.

If I could talk to the band right now face to face I would have to say that I think they should swing drastically back to their ska/punk roots and leave the mainstream music alone.

That isn't to say that there aren't several very good songs on this album, (including "Hey Baby," which I am sorry - but - I happen to like - and screw the rest of you up tight reviewers who won't let the band have a little fun. If you had read up on the origins of this song and what was going on when they wrote it, it is about their fun times in Jamaica, and they have every right to make a song about that.) The best songs on this album have already been mentioned by other reviewers, but what I wanted to mention and comment on was the FEEL of this album.

After listening to "Tragic Kingdom," for the first time I was dazed as to how good it was, I love Gwen's lyrics and vocals on that album, and the band's energy and feel for that album are unbelievable. After listening to this newest album I just don't have that same feeling.

So over-all I will rate this a 4, it is still a No Doubt album, and it is still Gwen singing, but dammit - for one thing put some pants back on your drummer, no one wants to see that (Gwen on the other hand . . .) - and if any members of No Doubt, or anyone close to them reads these reviews, PLEASE, consider going back to your roots, rediscover your "Tragic Kingdom," for that is where your music is waiting for you again.

Music Review: garbage
Rating: 1 Stars

If you want good No Doubt, get tragic kingdom, get Tragic Kingdom(their best), get anything, but don't get this.Anyone who is new to No Doubt and listened to this cd before listening to any of their other work, will be amazed that such a band could hold out for so long.I would be to.This album shows no evidence of how great of a band they are, and what they are capable of doing.Gwen's voice is now a tiny little backround instrument, instead of the centerpiece.I don't hear the band anywhere here. Were they asleep when this was recorded. And I honestly don't know what genre this album falls into. It's not pop.Calling it rock is a disgrace. And please don't call it ska.People say, yeah, well they blend all these influences on this album. No they don't blend them. It's like throwing all these different styles into a mixer. What you get will not taste too nice.I mean have they completely lost it???This is not No Doubt by any means. And I'm all up for reinvention, but this is just ridiculous. And can someone please tell me what the hell is up with the little beeps, bleeps in the backround of practically every song??It sounds like there's an arcade in the backround!!!Their lyrics have also gotten ridiculous, and hold no meaning whatsoever, and DON'T make any sense.I can't believe that the same woman who once wrote "I always wanted to be a mom, sometimes, I wish for a mistake" on 1999's Return of Saturn, is now writing"Hey baby, girls say, boys say"!!!!I mean cmon!!!!I really loved this band, and still do.But with the exception of Platinum Blonde Life,Don't Let Me Down, and In My Head, everything else is ...!!!!!!!They used to be able to write great rock music, mix in a little folk, a littlepunk,a little ska, write great lyrics, sing it wonderfully, and make it sound fresh. They actually wrote great music too, now I see no strong melodies.I don't know what they were trying to do here, but I hope on their next album they're able to try something new without going nuts!!!If you want evidence of what a great band they are get "Return of Saturn"!!

Music Review: I should have known!

Gwen, what did you do?

Tragic Kingdom still stands as one of my favorite CDs of all time. It's great stuff, no bad songs at all. One of the few CDs out there that I can listen to straight through. I fell in love with Return of Saturn, they weren't as ska-like as Tragic Kingdom, but I liked the way No Doubt were headed. I wanted to see the band mature. I liked the song South Side, with Moby.
I hated that thing with Eve.
Now Gwen Stefani is ruining a good band. I used to like her. I used to think she was cool. But now...I don't know what to think. I'm very dissapointed.
Rocksteady, rocksteady. Like I said, I loved TK and ROS, and I was eagerly awaiting Rock Steady from the day it was announced. I don't listen to the radio that much, so I had never heard Hey Baby before, but I had heard of the song. I got it for Christmas and I popped it in my CD player, expecting another Tragic Kingdom masterpiece.
That is not what I got. Instead I got a bunch of boring, repetitive, bunch of hip-hop .... The ska influences are gone. The lyrics are nonexistant. This sounds nothing like the Return of Saturn I adored and is even farther away from Tragic Kingdom. What happened to the old No Doubt I loved? I would have liked to review each song, but I can't. After listening to around 10 seconds of each song, I took the CD out of the player and listened to Green Day instead, tossing this off to the side. I took my second copy of Rock Steady and gave it to my No Doubt loving friend. Unfortunately, she could not discern the differences between this and Tragic Kingdom, and has now fallen in love with it. Oh well.
My point is, if you liked that duet with Eve, you'll like this. If you thought Hey Baby was a good song, the rest of this album follows the same chord. If you want another Tragic Kingdom, go listen to Tragic Kingdom. Because this sounds nothing like the No Doubt of old.

Gwen Stefani might as well go solo and become the new Pink. The rest of No Doubt, get a new singer and go back to your roots.
