Music Review: Tour de force of potential

Although "Beacon Street Collection" lacks the spit-and-polish of the professionally produced "Tragic Kingdom" and their following albums, the band's melodic talents and lyrical smarts are still present and accounted for. The presence of former band member Eric Stefani's piano only adds more of a poetic resonance to songs like "By The Way" and the jazz-tinged "Blue In The Face." Gwen's vocals are substantially more rocky and unevem, although that's not necessarily a bad thing: it adds a certain sense of unpredictability as she occassionally goes off on trills and other tricks that were lost as the band emerged into the mainstream. The Gwen we know today, however, is in perfect form on songs such as the echoic, beautiful "Stricken" and the dark "Greener Pastures," whose broody sound resurfaced on the phenomenally melancholy "Return of Saturn." The in-your-face affectations of No Doubt make appearances on the hair-raising "Snakes" and the classic opener, "Open The Gate."

"Beacon Street Collection" is the foundation of No Doubt's future endeavours. All of their future sounds can be found on this CD -- it's a stellar, although not impeccably produced, album that merits repeated listens.
