Music Reviews of With The Lights Out

Music Review: Nirvana fan's nirvana
Rating: 5 Stars

There really is no need for a rating between 2 and 4 stars on this set. It's probably safe to say that you are either going to love it or hate it.....it's a 1 or a 5 and nothing in between.

If you like all the pretty songs and could care less what it all means, then this set is not what you are looking for. This set is everything but radio friendly, and was clearly designed for some other purpose than shifting units. Go out and buy the greatest hits CD, or just pick up the studio albums.

If you are a fan, then this set is Nirvana nirvana.

In Nirvana nirvana you take the good and the bad. The good is that it's incredibly powerful music by an incredible artist. The bad is that it's powerful music coming from a very negative place. Just look at the way Cobain went out, and you'll know why the pain in the music never comes out forced. The theme here is depressing and if it ever sounds optimistic, then you are hearing what's called cynicism. That's Nirvana nirvana for you, but then...only fans are going to like this anyway.

A lot of the music on here won't be new to fans. Much of it has been available (with far more clicks and hiss) for many, many years on the bootleg label. You still want to own this though, because of how good a job they did cleaning it up. Take 'Here She Comes Now', an incredible Velvet Underground cover where the bootleg had decent audio overall, even with the audible *CLICK* of a tape player at the start, etc. The cleaned up version in this set sounds near pristine - no click, no hiss, just a powerful cover. Other tracks fair better or worse, overall, but do incredibly well given what they were working with. Clearly, a lot of effort went into cleaning things up, and it payed off.

Music Review: This collection is for the FANS only.
Rating: 5 Stars

Nirvana? What can be said about this band which has not been said before? (practically nothing).

This collection (which is marketed toward the fans of the band) is an impressive collection of material which will more or less haunt you while you listen. Much of the material has never been released on any other album or single, so most of the tracks are MEDIOCRE. However, the music that can be described as "mediocre" from NIRVANA is still better than most every other band in the history of bands.

Nirvana music is toxic and raw. And because this collection includes mostly unpolished material, the included tracks are more toxic and raw than what has been released on their studio albums. Many of the tracks were recorded at home with a tape player (or by some other means) and the sound quality is "piss-poor". Other tracks were recorded in a studio and sound great (despite the fact that grunge music is not meant to sound "great").

The tracks include demos, live performances, and b-sides (which I really love to collect). The 3 discs are a wonderful addition to ANY (and every) rock music catalog. If you are a FAN of Nirvana, buying this collection will be a matter of "when" not "if". NO Nirvana fan should be excused from OWNING this collection of awesome and inspired grunge.

The third disc contains post-in utero material which is heartbreaking because the demo tracks were never recorded in a studio (at least to my knowledge). "Do Ri Me" is (or was) the future of Nirvana.

Hopefully, you will buy this collection and listen with fresh ears... after all, most of this stuff is older than your younger siblings. It has been a long time since Nirvana destroyed the competion... keep on truckin' Nirvana!

Music Review: A very good purchase for Nirvana fans.

"With the Lights Out" is great for real Nirvana fans. Yes, it is raw and the sound quality is not that of "Nevermind" or "In Utero," but that's not what it is about. It's about the music. It's about hearing what Kurt's passion, angst, and sadness sounded like before it was all doctored up and smoothed out for a studio album.
So it is important that you understand this before buying this boxed set. You may have heard many of these songs on the "Outcesticides" or other bootleg albums, but "With the Lights Out" cleans the tracks up considerably, which makes for a more pleasant listening experience. Judging from some of the other reviews I've read on here, it seems like there's some pretty disgruntled little kids who were expecting 61 brand new studio quality Nirvana songs. The back of the box lists the title of each song and then labels each one as a "demo" or "solo recording" or "radio appearance." Apparently this was a little too misleading for the average consumer. I guess there's a lot of people who have a limited interest in music but enjoy the act of shopping. That explains Metallica!
Back to the point. This is a phenomenal boxed set that every true Nirvana fan should pick up. It gives you a chance to hear some songs you haven't heard before as well as some different versions of the songs you already know. But if you are just a "radio Nirvana fan," just leave this boxed set on the shelf. Also, if you just plain hate Nirvana, why bother writing a review? I can't imagine that there are too many people out there who hate Nirvana yet still need to read a useless review on Amazon to help them decide whether or not they should buy a Nirvana album that they will HATE. Oh, nevermind, those people probably are that dumb.

Music Review: Never speak a word again ....
Rating: 5 Stars

I remember it like it was yesterday. Nirvana was the first band I loved and loved with passion. I can admit it, I didn't know who they were before "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but I loved them. We've almost forgotten Kurt as he became a springboard for Courtney's cloying celebrity personality, a stack of legal documents, and a statistic. And we moved on, fostering in other genres after grunge died. But it was truly wonderful for that brief moment in time, he grabbed me at the perfect angst ridden age of 17 and didn't let go.

This is the last great rock band to close out the 20th century, and don't pretend you were too cool to not like them. They made great music. This box set is for the fans, not for those who have never heard Nirvana before. The radio clips, cutting room floor stuff and DVD footage is something only the true fans can appreciate. If you're one of the 2% of people in the entire Judeo-Christian world who only knows "Smells Like Teen Spirit", this isn't for you. Collections like this bring you as a fan closer to them rather than further away. You have to go through rough drafts before you make a gem.

I was speechless when I first heard this. "You Know You're Right" was wonderful, as well as the B sides which I had collected over the years on tapes finally put in one place, but "Do Ray Mi" gave us a glimpse into the future that could've been. Were he alive today, who knows what he would be doing. Maybe he'd have taken us to another level. You can't escape the sadness, but there is also a strangely uplifting joy. It takes you back but pushes you forward. This is the greatest gift Kurt gave us, his music, simple and plain. He'll never speak a word again, but in this he achieved immortality.

these are the songs i skip to the most, but i exagerat, i dont really skip any, i just love these more.
there is not enough time in the day to listen to this box set once a day, but there should be.
this is not just some 15 yearold fan shouting out about his love for nirvana, this is a young man who respects all kinds of music sitting down and saying, this is the best collection of songs i have heard in a VERY long time.
weather you are a die hard fan or not, it doesnt matter, you will love it all the same. i got my copy a few days early, but havent wrote my review till now. the ONLY track on here that i think is worth skipping is "beans". though it is utterly hillarious, it is kind of annoying when you are in real nirvana mood.
this band, weather you admit it or not, is one of the most importand bands ever. in name, it is only behind the beatles and a select few other door openers. in fact, nirvana is the most inportant american band ever. they made the underground the top leval and the trash that was on top, back to the bottom. if you love this band, you must have it, and if you think this band had some good moments, you must have it anyway. as far as boxed sets go this one is cheep, and worth if if just for disk 3 and the dvd. i advise everyone who can aforde this buys it, as soon as possible.

it makes you remember that music used to be a respected entity, and it still should be.
