Music Review: Oceanborn

Oceanborn is the second studio album by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, and the first big break for the band. Oceanborn was considered a revolutionary album that introduced the world to a completely different type of sound. Even today, Oceanborn is considered to be one of the definitive works of the genre and Nightwish, and, according to band member and creative force behind the band Tuomas, Oceanborn is the band's truth "first" album, since he considers Angel Fall First to be somewhat of a demo. Epica singer Simone Simons has even attributed her interest in taking up opera singing to Oceanborn.
For more recent Nightwish fans, Oceanborn can come as a bit of a culture shock. Tarja's vocals are at there most operatic and classical, plus, there are numerous moments where you can't quite understand what she's saying or, as a native English speaker, it's obvious that Tarja has an accent. This is also being the use of a full orchestra and the male vocal talents of Marco Hietala, and some songs even include some folk instruments and go more toward a folk metal/lighter and more atmospheric feel than heavy metal. If you became a Nightwish addict with Once or Dark Passion Play, it can be tough to go all to way back to this. Still, Oceanborn has some wonderful music.
Probably the most well-known song on here is "Sleeping Sun," because it was re-recorded and re-issued in 2007, and was being preformed up until Nightwish's End of an Era DVD. But, there's also the band's cover of the classic song "Walking in the Air" with Tarja's classical opera vocals carrying listeners through the song. Another favorite is "Passion and the Opera," particularly due to the operatic trilling Tarja delivers in certain segments of the song -even though, at points, the lyrics are unintelligible or just pain don't make sense. I also enjoy "Gethsemane" with its strong musical presence and unexpected lyrics.
For Nightwish fans, Oceanborn really is a must-have. Though the band's sound has come a long way from these humble beginnings, it's an important piece of their history.
