Music Review: Soundtracks are so '80s!

For those of us of a certain age, soundtrack albums were almost as important as the movies which spawned them. Can you imagine Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Thank God It's Friday or Footloose without thinking about the great songs that accompanied them? 1982's Night Shift, a goofy little movie about prostitution and a morgue (don't ask!), starring Henry Winkler (forever Happy Days' "The Fonz"), Michael ("I'm Batman") Keaton and Shelley Long of Cheers fame, was never on anyone's top 10 list for anything, but the music and performers it showcased are an interesting combination of pop music purveyors of the time. You may recognize any or all of: Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday, Someway"; The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; Rufus and Chaka Khan's "Everlasting Love"; and Rod Stewart's version of "That's What Friends Are For", later popularized by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight (sans Pips) and Stevie Wonder. While a perfect capsule of its time - Pointer Sisters, Talk Talk, Heaven 17, Quarterflash and Al Jarreau all perform individual tracks - it also is a wonderfully timeless piece of pop confection. If only someone could dig up "Soup For One."
