Music reviews of Labour of Lust

Music Review: Still Lustful After All These Years
Rating: 5 Stars

Nick Lowe's second brilliant solo album was a less quirky but more solidly written album than his "Jesus Of Cool (aka Pure Pop for Now People)". Lowe also upped the dynamic by bringing his Rockpile pals onboard. Where "Cool" was a delightful album on almost every front, Lowe was a one man band on that go around. Having Dave Edmunds, Terry Williams and Billy Bremmer in the studio made for better chemistry and that made all the difference.

"Labour" also has Lowe's two biggest singles, including his lone American hit, "Cruel To Be Kind." Coming off as muscular Motown with guitars, "Cruel To Be Kind" jangles along as the doot-doot chorus makes for great sing-along. The one song Lowe didn't write, "Switchboard Susan," is a chuckler of the best grade, making all sorts of telephone man jokes like "when I'm with you girl, I get an extension...and I don't mean Alexander Graham Bell's invention." With Lowe's naturally Beatle-esque vocal abilities, he gets away with such silliness, including "Dose Of You."

As meticulous as Lowe is with production, "Labour's" new remaster is terrific. Edmunds' guitar now crackles on "Born Fighter" and "Switchboard Susan." Both the odd tracks between the US and UK version are present, along with an extra B-Side ("Basing Street"). From the stateside version, "American Squirm," and from the English, "Endless Grey Ribbon." "Squirm" is also unusual in that it features Elvis Costello and The Attractions' Pete Thomas. Huey Lewis (a pal of Lowe's before forming The News) blows a mean harmonica on "Born Fighter." And finally, Will Birch from fellow 80's popsters The Records and now a biographer contributes a good essay and interview with Lowe.

"Labour Of Lust" sounds so grand and brings back memories of just how great Lowe is as a solo artist that I'm now hoping for more of his 80's albums start showing up. Especially "The Abominable Showman" and "His Cowboy Outfit."

Description of Labour of Lust

As the bassist and primary songwriter for Brinsley Schwarz, Nick Lowe was one of the catalysts of the pub rock phenomenon in the early 1970s. As the co-founder and house producer at Stiff Records, he would help create the blueprint for the modern indie rock label and usher in British punk and new wave, helming historic recordings for The Damned, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders. Here, his landmark second solo album Labour of Lust gets the deluxe reissue treatment, sporting an expanded 12pg. booklet with period photos, new essays and artwork by groundbreaking graphic artist Barney Bubbles. The reissue also includes Nick's biggest US hit ''Cruel To Be Kind'', the originally U.K.-only ''Endless Grey Ribbon'' and U.S.-only ''American Squirm''; plus bonus B-side ''Basing Street.'' LOL is the only of Lowe's solo albums to hold the distinction of featuring Nick's Rockpile cohorts Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams on every track. Originally released in 1979 and out of print for nearly twenty years, the album has been remastered from the original source, reintroducing this masterpiece to a new generation of pop music obsessives.
As busy as Nick Lowe was as staff producer for Stiff Records during the late 1970s, it's amazing he had the time to turn out his own impressive collection of work. Labour of Lust, his second album, bristles with sharp, witty lyrics and driving guitars that crackle from crisp, economic playing. It's full of essential, slightly twisted, always amusing three-minute gems such as "American Squirm" (as in, "I made an...") and "Born Fighter." In a perfect world, "Cruel to Be Kind" would have only been the first in a series of Top 10 singles from this record. "Without Love" indicates the country-pop direction he would follow in the '80s, while "You Make Me" and "Without Love" foreshadow the thoughtful, mature approach that characterizes such '90s releases as the superb Dig My Mood. It's simply impossible to recommend this record highly enough. --Percy Keegan
