Music reviews of What's Left of Me

Music Review: Awwww, poor little baby Nick Lachey is going through a divorce, how sad...
Rating: 1 Stars

For his second album, Nick Lachey decided to feed off of the teat of the corporate cash cow by capitalizing on the media's obsession with him and the dissolution of his marriage to the equally talent-deficient Jessica Simpson. As the title would imply, What's Left Of Me is Lachey wringing his hands, crying his heart out and essentially throwing a long tantrum about his relationship coming to an end. That's right - this is Lachey throwing himself an album-length pity party, hoping that others would pay the cost of admission to attend (sadly, lots of people did, hence the high debut on the charts). Judging by the material on this album, one could conclude that Lachey actually has the gall to believe that he's the only person that ever went through a breakup or a divorce. Well, not all of us are fortunate enough to have a major record deal, a television series in development, a secure future with plenty of money, and the handsome appearance often needed to make it in this business ... what I'm saying is that Lachey should consider himself very lucky for everything he has going for him. Also taking into account the numerous flings that this guy has had since the split, does anyone really believe that he's genuinely suffering? My opinion: Lachey is a fraud.

I'm not jumping to conclusions - I may be completely wrong about Lachey, and this album may actually reflect what he's been going through in the last few months. If it does, then the guy is a total pansy. I can definitely understand and identify with the sadness and disappointment that comes with the end of a relationship, but this guy just goes on and on and seems completely inconsolable. If Lachey sheds as many tears as this album would have us believe, then it's safe to assume that the city he resides in has been under a flood watch for a very long time. Seriously, Nick - get some counseling or something, you can definitely afford it with the money you've made from 98 Degrees and Newlyweds and the divorce settlement. Or you can go ahead and keep crying - at least the residents of your city can rest easy knowing they'll never be at risk of having a drought.

What you'll find on What's Left Of Me is basically the same syrupy style of singing that Lachey has done over the years, only with a more organic background - the one bright spot on the album is the use of actual instruments as opposed to the usual synths, sequencers and drum machines. As mentioned before, the lyrics are painfully sappy and maudlin, and probably aren't even a reflection of what this playboy is really feeling. He's just trying to take advantage of his young fans by portraying himself as a hopeless romantic that was smashed into smithereens by a failed marriage that's trying to put himself back together again. First of all, this guy is too old to be a teen idol (33 or 34, I'm not quite sure) and should just grow up already. Second, he knows that his fans are young and naive and is taking advantage of them by apparently pretending to be something he's not. Does Lachey have any shame?

Also, I recommend that you regard several of the glowing reviews here with skepticism. Many of the reviews that you see posted here were most likely written by members of the promotions team at Jive Records. The common phrase "I usually never post reviews" should be a hint - after all, these people need an excuse to cover up the fact that they've never written a review, so why not try that one? Do you honestly think they're going to say "I work for Jive Records and Nick Lachey is a brilliant artist"? Of course not.

In summary: I really think that Lachey wants people to think he's suffering from the end of his marriage, hoping they buy his album out of sympathy. If I'm wrong and this is how he genuinely feels, the guy is a crybaby and should save his whining and crying for the only person that really cares - the guy staring back at him in the mirror. If I'm right, this guy should really be ashamed of himself. With all the good fortune he's had, you would think he would be at least somewhat generous and charitable, but he isn't in the slightest. You may be asking "Where's all that money going?". I'll tell you - after the record label takes their percentage, it's going directly to Lachey's nightlife fund, where any money that he receives will help him have more drinks with his friends and have some more one night stands! You know, to "ease the pain" of a failed marriage. Being Nick Lachey is not that bad, despite what he may have you believe. I suggest you avoid the treacly, saccharine, lyrically artificial mess of an album known as What's Left Of Me.

Description of What's Left of Me

Includes the bonus tracks "Alone" and "Because I Told You So."
It's tough not to make a parlor game out of Nick Lachey's What's Left of Me. Five points if you knew that Mr. Jessica Simpson was more than just beefcake, but a pop star in his own right. Ten if you recalled that he was once a member of 98 Degrees, not Backstreet Boys or 'N Sync. Twenty if you can get through these 12 tracks without wincing. It's not that the singing's no good--Lachey's grip on boy-band whispers and wails is still sturdy enough to send most 12-year-olds swooning, and he works in a fine falsetto on final number "Resolution"--it's the song titles that sting. "I Can't Hate You Anymore," "On Your Own," "Outside Looking In," and pretty much every other track references, with soap-operatic dippiness, the singer's breakup with his Daisy Dukes-wearing-ex. Instead of making a stand for himself as an under-appreciated artist who's capable of cranking out thoughtful, far-reaching work, he makes it harder than ever to take him seriously. And that's despite the fact that he racks up eight co-writer credits here. Add in an obvious bid to sound current against a contemporary pop landscape in the midst of a boy-band backlash, and the case can be made that Lachey's once 98-degree heat index has dipped way down. Attempts at emo ("Run to Me," "You're Not Alone") don't work, and a few unmistakable stabs at Ashlee- and Jessica-styled vocal hiccups throughout seem contrived, if not downright weird. Still, tabloid junkies should find a lot to love in all the dirty-laundry airing, and anybody who can't resist a photo spread of broken man baring his anguish (as well as a good portion of his chest) will want to pick it up for the pinup possibilities. --Tammy La Gorce
