Music Review: Fantastic

I think this song "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" was a Dylan tune originally though it's been done by countless others, among them Elvis Presley, Rod Stewart and Sandy Denny and I'm sure a whole lot more. But Nick Drake's soulful reworking of the song into soft country blues just opens it up! Incredible. Although you can hear someone tinkling the glasses in the background. "All My Trials" is another standard redone with new life and beautiful effect - must be Molly Drake accompanying him on the harmony - so soothing. There are too many good pieces to mention on this album, and I think it is as fair a place as any to start, or continue, with Nick Drake. Fans of this album would like Dave Van Ronk's "Inside Dave Van Ronk" (1962). Drake was obviously influenced by him, and he is worth hearing in his own right. Also worth checking out if you get the chance, though in a different vein of folk, is Roy Harper, a contemporary of Drake's, not a predecessor ("Stormcock", "Valentine", "Flat, Baroque and Berserk", etc). Anyway, Family Tree is wonderful. With 28 songs here, there's a lot to discover and recognize in new form. This one works for naps on rainy days as well.
There's a chunky liner notes booklet included. His sister, in the form of a letter to her deceased brother, gives a pretty vivid background to what was going on with the family Nick came from, its history, passion and pastimes. Interesting.

Description of Family Tree
Family Tree, to be released on June 19th, 2007 on Tsunami LG/Fontana, will feature previously unreleased tracks from the vaults of the Estate of Nick Drake. The album, produced by Drake Estate manager Cally, tells the story of Nick Drake's musical development in the years prior to recording his official debut, Five Leaves Left. Family Tree explores the upbringing of an artist who in his tragically short career produced three albums which continue to be treasured by fans. Recorded in the late 1960's, the 28 tracks feature lo-fi recordings made on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. In addition to the release of Family Tree, 2007 will see the release of an upgraded version of the Fruit Tree Box Set which includes Nick Drake's three original studio albums, a new book, as well as a DVD of the A Skin Too Few documentary.You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David Greenberger
