Music Review: SOUTH WEST OF EDEN

As the previous review accurately cites, there's misrepresentation on the part of Amazon in terms of the packaging. There are only 2 discs. Not 3. Disc 1 is the original re-mastered album. Disc II is a DVD documentary about the making of, which ranges to some insightful comments from all the key players (except Cave) to some occasionally inane fan babble. Also included on disc II are the bonus tracks, which are a bit of pain to download into your iTunes.
That said, allow me to focus on the album itself for the curious consumer.
As with all the other re-masters in the on going Bad Seed re-issue campaign, the sound is spectacularly better than the original cd incarnation. Reason enough to buy it again. For instance, after all these years, I can finally hear the haunting guitar coda at the end of "Lucy". Something the previous issue only hinted at.
In terms of the Bad Seeds catalogue, The Good Son is a milestone. The chaotic phantasmagoria & experimentation that characterized the Bad Seeds up till now, give way to still waters running deep. Any traces of Cave's furious Birthday Party past, are quietly laid to rest.
The first sign this is going to be anything but a typical Bad Seeds album is the fact that it mournfully kicks off in Portuguese. No surprise since Cave uprooted himself from Berlin & London & relocated to Brazil. That said, Foi Na Cruz sounds more like something Elvis might croon at the end of some sort of weird,Brazilian answer to a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. Call it a South American Western sound, one that characterizes much of this album.
The title track starts with a refrain borrowed from Johnny Cash's Another Man Done Gone and nods in the direction of Steinbeck's East of Eden, turning the Prodigal Son story on end. With a cinematic sweep of strings, Cave spins a tale of the son who stayed at home, broodingly simmering with jealousy & resentment that may or may not erupt in homicidal fury. Its the album's most epic & suspenseful track.
In terms of the many ballads on offer, The Ship Song is deservedly the most celebrated but the aforementioned Lucy & Sorrow's Child burn just as close. Also of note is the soulful lament of The Weeping Song which oddly enough brings somber echoes Frankie Laine's Rawhide to mind.
That's not to say the album doesn't have a couple of rousing moments. The Hammer Song forebodingly harkens back to The Prodigal Son theme, this time focusing on the one who ran away, lost in the wilderness, fleeing from visions & omens & praying for home. With the Witness Song, Cave throws all melancholia to the wind, playing the crusading preacher to the hilt, raising the rafters with, "Who will be the witness when you're all to blind to see?"
Obviously, the tenderness & restrained melodic feel of this one stumped long time fans, leaving them to scratch their heads & wonder if Cave finally had gone soft. On the contrary in light of the strum und drang of it's predecessor, Tender Prey--- The Good Son was the bravest of moves.
