Music Review: Honest Faith Lyrically and Beautifully Presented

This Mystery is my first exposure to the ethereal-voiced Nordeman, and I can't wait to hear more. She wrote all the songs on the CD and her writing is well-honed, original, and inventive. Her voice has an almost childlike timbre and it's just right for a lyrical expression of childlike faith in Christ. "I would shed this grown-up skin I'm in to touch an angel's wing, and I would be free." Many a day I feel that way, wearied by the world and longing to escape. Listening to this CD is a good beginning. Nordeman has a good sense for what makes a successful melody, and this is no small thing in music. No arrangement or over-production can mask a weak melody. Fortunately for the listener, all of the melodies on this CD are strong and pleasing. This Mystery is a wonderful CD to worship God to without compromising your spiritual beliefs or your feelings.

My favorite song by far is Small Enough, a simple and beautiful tune. Fernando Ortega joins her on this tune and it moves me to tears every time, in spite of myself. These are very well written lyrics, playing on the juxtaposition between God's greatness and human frailty, biblical events compared to the mundane struggles of everyday living. "Oh, great God, be small enough to hear me now." It's what we struggle with in our doubt-whether God, creator of heaven and earth would take time out of His incomprehensibly important day to hear our small voices. That He does is the point exactly. Nordeman is amazed, as many believers are, at how God, so great and almighty, made Himself a man to walk "among the least of us," and many of these songs address this wonderful truth, "this mystery."

This Mystery would be an excellent addition to your music library if you're a fan of contemporary Christian female vocalists, excellent songwriters, singers with angelic voices, worship music, or any number of other qualities this music possesses.
