This is one of the best reissues on EMI of Capitol's Full Dimensional Sound recordings. The Khachaturian and Kabalevsky come from 1959, while the Shostakovich and Bartok come from 1960. The former feature up close up, detailed sound with only modest atmosphere, while the latter, recorded in London's Kingsway Hall with only two microphones, have warmth and superb balances in a broad sound picture. The remasterings have been done by EMI's usual source, the excellent Squires Productions. Alfred Newman's performances of the Khachaturian never have been surpassed. They are full of vigor and spirit, with terrific orchestral discipline and lots of pizzazz. If you always have been allergic to Khachaturian's ballet music, you should give this a try. It is all skillful and brilliant, even the hackneyed Sabre Dance. The other highlight of this CD is Robert Irving's Miraculous Mandarin. The Philharmonia was one of the greatest orchestras ever to record the piece, and everything from the vigorous strings to the wild brass comes across marvelously. The other selections on the CD certainly are very fine, too. This is one of the most enjoyable ballet CDs in the catalog.
