Music Review: Early Dolls

These early demos featuring original drummer Billy Murcia are pretty crude all around. The Dolls sound a bit sluggish and unsure of themselves. This is understandable, of course, considering they had only been together for about four months. The sound quality isn't too bad. But, unfortunately, the tapes suffer from volume fluctuations that can be somewhat annoying.Many tunes that would eventually appear on their two studio albums are included here in embrionic form. I wouldn't say that any of the tracks on "Lipstick Killers" are superior to those on "NY Dolls" and "Too Much Too Soon". However, it is cool to hear them in such a raw, unpolished state. I prefer the '73 demos with Jerry Nolan, but this is still a fine album.

'Lipstick Killers' was originally recorded in 1972 and features the original line-up of the New York Dolls, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur 'Killer' Kane and Billy Murcia.
