At the time of its release in 1994, this compilation made perfect sense. New Order had effectively stopped touring or releasing new singles and rumours of a break-up abounded. Typically (for New Order, at least) the band refused to confirm or deny these rumours, but it soon became apparent that it would be a very long while before we'd see another New Order album, if ever (a supposition which turned out to be quite correct when the band finally reconvened in late 1998).
Enter "(the best of) New Order" and its companion volume, "Rest of," both of which fulfilled two basic roles: to introduce new audiences to the band with a mass market release and to act as a supplement to the excellent 1987 singles compilation, "Substance," by rounding up the remaining singles released since then. This compilation also allowed London Records -- New Order's new label -- to cash in on their Factory back catalog in lieu of new releases (keeping in mind that the album reissue campaigns still lay more than a decade into the future).
Sonically, "(the best of) New Order" improved upon the previous compilation in some areas. Both "True Faith" and "1963" received an audio clean-up (unfortunately with the removal of some synth work and the final verse in the latter track) while the album tracks and 7' singles sounded a bit sharper than before -- many with some slight alteration. Since many of the B-sides and studio out-takes from the "Technique" era onward lacked the special essential quality of their earlier work, few lamented their absence here.
Since then, New Order reformed, recorded two more albums, re-released their old material in remastered editions (with bonus tracks, rarities and singles), pushed out two more compilations and coughed up one half-assed boxed set before leaving the playing field again, this time likely for good. Now, more than a decade-and-a-half after its release, this once vital collection is a bit of a relic (although "Substance" retains its importance as the near-definitive, go-to source for New Order's early singles).
If you already own this (or can acquire it cheaply), then enjoy this "start-stop" at the midpoint of New Order's collective journey. Otherwise, purchase the far more complete "Singles" compilation instead.
