Music Review: When We Meet On A Cloud

I originally discovered this album, and the band, from Last.fm, which is a great source of finding new music. I heard a few tracks using the service and found that I was incredibly interested in hearing more from Neutral Milk Hotel. I purchased the MP3 album from Amazon and basically just dropped it on my iPod where it sat for months. One night, I decided to give it a chance before bed, and I think I ended up staying awake until 3AM, engulfing myself in the sounds, lyrics, meanings and feelings.
As countless other reviews have stated, you're either in or you're out with In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - there is no middle ground. I've suggested the album to friends, and I've never once heard "It's ok...", only extremely positive or negative reviews, which is one of the things that make the album so special in my mind. Everything on the album is so raw and real, that I believe it scares off some, while endears others, but the album stays true to it's overall theme and feel.
I've now purchased the MP3 album, CD and vinyl versions of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, and I don't miss a penny of the money I've spent. My best advice for those who are looking to give this album a serious shot is to be in the right mood when you first sit down to listen. It's not an album you want to listen to while running at the gym...it's an album that you want to give all of your attention to, and it will keep it.

Led by Jeff Magnum, In the Aeroplane over the Sea finds the Neutral Milk Hotel assemblage loosely performing a series of narratives backed by folksy acoustic guitar. But from that springboard, a quiver of instruments (horns, organs, accordions, saws, banjo, zanzithophone, etc.) are layered into a sometimes rootsy, sometimes lo-fi, and often psychedelic mix. Contrary to most pop experimentalists, NMH songs stretch way past the two-minute mark: "Two Headed Boy" transforms from a Guided by Voices-ish romp into a New Orleans big band funeral march, "The Fool" is as catchy as anything Poi Dog Pondering ever produced, and "Holland" builds up to a crescendo of saw, Uillean pipes, a chorus of voices, and fuzzed-out guitar.
