Music Review: A comparison

I've read numerous reviews below wherein the reviewers attempt but never quite successfully compare Ms. Case to other artists - whether they be country, alt-country, what have you. That's quite understandable, Neko is a musician who makes fearless musical choices and isn't constrained by anyone else's perceptions of what her music is or should be but her own. In other words, she strays all over the musical landscape, picking up only those artifacts she chooses and making them her own. Not many musicians, and certainly very few FEMALE musicians, have been able to do this successfully.
There is, however, one other artist who has trodden more or less similar ground (from a perspective of sensibility, temperament, and artistic independence, anyway), and whose music provides a very fitting point of comparison to Neko's. I speak of Kirsty MacColl. From her early dabblings in bubble gum pop, to explorations in country music, to further maturations into more modern and world-influenced music, there are numerous parallels between these two artists. Ms. MacColl forged a fiercely independent and iconoclastic path in her musical career before her tragic, all-too-soon and all-too-preventable death in 2000.
Neko is similar to Kirsty in so many respects (and no, I'm not talking about their shared auburn tresses), that the parallels and comparisons are innumerable. Wonderful music on both sides of the Atlantic, and we are all better for their music having found its way into our ears.

Bloodshot.Laying waste to all the wink-wink irony, dubious material, and vocal mediocrity that frequently mires alt-country fringe dwellers, the second outing from this Virginia-born belter marries tough, twangy rock with wild, unguarded emotion. Neko's principal charm may be her voice--sometimes coming on with Dusty Springfield's indigo-eyed soul (the dreamlike "Porchlight"), Patsy Cline's aching slow burn (the slinky "No Need to Cry"), and Wanda Jackson's imperious sexuality (the rockabilly "Mood to Burn Bridges")--but her songwriting (she cowrote every tune) is surprisingly consistent and memorable. She celebrates the "passion for life" found in her abandoned home of Tacoma, Washington, or a strapped-on Telecaster, and on her best song, "Guided by Wire," she balances between "darkest recollection" and the freedom of music, the kind that matters most, all those voices "singing my life back to me." --Roy Kasten
