Music Reviews of Greatest Hits

Music Review: Coulda been better
Rating: 4 Stars

Like many fans here, I have a few misgivings about this collection. But its still undeniably a solid set of incredible songs, thus the four star rating. If you must have a single disk to encompass Neil's career, this is what you need. Its main problem, besides the fact that its impossible to contrain a catalog like Neil's onto a single disk, is the fact that it is so skewed toward his early years. The entire 80's and 90's have been reduced to two tracks. Granted, most people won't miss the eighties, but the nineties have some of his best work. Maybe there's a volume 2 planned?

Obviously old Neil heads don't need this, but curious types wanting an easy jumping on point will find it here. You should also give consideration to the Decade collection though, which contains nearly all of these songs and many more besides.

Music Review: It got me interested
Rating: 5 Stars

Everyone knows that Neil Young is a music legend so, having not really heard his music before, I had pretty high expectations of this album. I'm happy to say they were not disappointed. I'm glad that I chose this CD as the starting point to the career of an artist who has achieved so much over the course of a long career because it really showcases Young's greatness as a lyricist and performer. This man really is multifaceted, and his music reflects that. There are so many songs on here and even though some longtime Neil Young fans will probably be disappointed with the track listing, all the songs I wanted to hear can be found on this album. What's more, it will probably be inspired to look further into Neil Young's musical catalogue. There are too many great songs on this album to list, so just buy it.

Music Review: Until We Get That Boxed Set...
Rating: 5 Stars

I'm definitely not a neophyte fan of Neil, but I bought this anyway. The track selections are great -- a mixture of the familiar and expected ("Southern Man") and some real gems like "Helpless" and "The Needle and the Damage Done" than have been fan favorites for years, but were not hits as such. The liner notes say that the tracks were selected by sales, airplay, and (where known) download stats -- not a bad way to go.

What's nice even for veteran fans is getting all these tracks with clean sound. Yeah, one of these days we're going to get that giant boxed set with everything he's ever done in sterling sound, if we all live so long. But for the moment, a lot of his stuff is only available in dubious first-generation CDs, so this is what we've got. I'd go for it.

Music Review: I Didn't Know It Would Be This Good
Rating: 5 Stars

I bought this CD for the two Neil Young songs that get the most air time "Hey Hey My My" and "Rockin' In the Free World". I had not been exposed to any of the other material until I put this CD in my player. What I discovered was a mixture of meaningful lyrics and unbelievable creativity that are no longer found on modern albums. The first two tracks blew me away because modern artists are incapable of writing songs that are longer than 4 minutes and 45 seconds. It has inspired me to look into other music of the 1960's and 1970's. I am sure the long time fans of Neil Young will know of some tracks that should be here, they may be right as I do not know. For people who don't know if they should buy this CD - Buy it. People who download music suck.
