Music Review: Sedaka At The Top Of His Game

At a time when many creative artists have relegated themselves to recording albums filled with standards and or songs made famous by others, Neil Sedaka has delivered an original pop album for adults that draws on seven decades of composing and performing, yet brings something fresh to the table in each of its 12 tracks.
Sedaka draws on his roots and experience in classical, doo wop, pop, and international music throughout the disc which is well-produced and sonically crisp and clear. "I would like to turn back time and live it all again" he sings in the energetic, salsa-Latino inspired opener "Do You Remember", featuring both English and Spanish lyrics with production work by David Foster. Sedaka's double-tracked vocals on the opening cut give way to the stripped-down, piano-driven "A Fool in Love", and the effective blues feel he sets on "Living In A Fantasy".
Longtime fans will be enchanted by "Right Or Wrong", a previously unrecorded song composed by Sedaka and his late songwriting partner Howie Greenfield in the mid-1950s. A traditional doo wop ballad, complete with smooth "shoo doo, shoo be doo" harmonies and chime accents, it harkens back to the blissful days of four and five-part group harmony.
The infectious, contemporary "I Got To Believe In Me Again" leads into the classically influenced, string-filled "Music Of My Life" and the expressive "I Keep Searching", where the instrumental accompaniment manages to remain restrained, yet lush. "Waiting" conjures some of the composer's favorite and most effective imagery, including clowns and rider-less carousels amidst a carefully crafted ballad that builds to a crescendo before ending in a hushed retard. Each track is unique, including "Won't You Share This Dream of Mine", sung in a hushed voice over jazz chords and an Austrian-flavored accordion. "How Can I Change Your Mind" is an introspective attempt to salvage a relationship which transports the listener back to the singer's achingly beautiful 1975 classic, "The Hungry Years". While the latter laments the decay of a relationship, the new song represents a follow-up plea for resolution and reconciliation. "Bringing Me Back To Life", with cello accompaniment, encompasses classical, Latin, pop, and contemporary music, and slides gracefully into "You", first released on 2003's "The Show Goes On". "You" is a fitting conclusion, and perhaps Sedaka's finest love song, highlighted by a strong vocal, sweet piano and string accompaniment, and a powerful melody.
In recent years, Neil's relationship with QVC has helped longtime supporters and new fans tune into his current works, including the stellar 2005 "The Miracle Of Christmas", and this latest effort.
Sedaka has publicly pondered whether "The Music of My Life" will be his final pop record. As he says in the liner notes, "there are only a certain amount of notes and chord progressions in pop writing." Yet, at 70, the composer demonstrates he is every bit the master craftsman who delivered "Sedaka's Back" and "The Hungry Years" decades ago. If, indeed, this disc is his swan song to pop music writing, Sedaka has gone out at the top of his game, creating a five-star classic worthy of his talent and reputation.
