Music Review: A studio standard by Milstein

There are several reasons to buy this CD. If you are looking for recordings of a great artist and want to buy just one album, this CD is an easy choice, since it features Nathan Milstein in 3 concerts he championed throughout his career. If you are looking for the best recordings of Bruch's and Mendelssohn and Prokofiev's 1st concerto, you are on the right track: there are very few versions which can compete with Milstein's Mendelssohn and Prokofiev, and nobody could match him in Bruch's G minor concerto. Finally, if you love Milstein and already have some of this music with him, but in a different version, it is a good reason to buy these studio variants from 1953-1954: maestro Milstein seldom played the same work in exactly the same way twice and constantly experimented with fingerings and bowings. I have four versions of Bruch's concerto with Milstein: w. Barbirolli (1942), w. Rodzinsky (1944), this one w. Steinberg (1953), w. Dorati (1961). All of them are stunning, but Milstein's accents in the exposition and the beginning of the first Allegro differ.
The recordings on this CD were made in 1953-54 with conductors William Steinberg/Pittsburg SO, with whom Milstein had an especially fruitful colloboration and Vladimir Golschmann/St.Louis SO: the latter provided a fine accompaniment to Milstein's glorious singing tone in the final movement of Prokofiev's concerto.
