Music reviews of Strip Me

Music Review: A Wonderful Album by a Wonderful Singer
Rating: 5 Stars

Natasha Bedingfield has already released two albums. These two albums were very different in some ways but what they had in common was the voice of Natasha Bedingfield and her lyrics, which accentuated positive views of life. It is only occasionally that this listener finds an artist who has set out to tell us about how positive life can be if we embrace who we are as individuals. It is certainly acceptable to dislike Ms. Bedingfield's work, but to say that her message is too uplifting is a sad commentary on our inability to see any light at all but only to see darkness.

First, some mention of "that voice." Though to an extent a matter of taste (all artists have to deal with this distinction), Ms. Bedingfield has a voice that bristles with urgency and emotion, rare today for sure. If the honesty in her voice and her talents are equal to the challenge at hand, delivering a life-affirming message of hope for human possibilities, as they certainly seem to be, then let the sunshine in. Hers is an admirable goal, as too much of what is popular today is not joyous and committed to the positive.

But what a voice! Her third U.S. album, "Strip Me," is further proof that there is a lot more here than a pop singer. Bedingfield has used her voice as a unifying factor on this varied and ambitious album. Pitch perfect, smokey, beautiful, playful, versatile, sexy and always interesting, Ms. Bedingfield's voice shines throughout "Strip Me." Singing beautifully crafted R&B/Pop/Rock songs, Ms. Bedingfield's voice soothingly sizzles with heart-felt interpretations of her lyrics. If you want to hear Bedingfield's superb singing, listen to the stripped down bonus tracks on the extended version of the album. Listen to these tracks or, best of all, "Wild Horses" on her first album. Bedingfield's performances are breathtaking.

I would recommend "Strip Me" to all the people who found the first two albums hook-filled and sung with genuine understanding of the lyrics and sometimes raw soulfulness, get this album. It may be her best (and numbers one and two were no slouches) and that's saying a lot. All the rest of you owe it to yourselves to buy this album; it truly is catchy and it is a joy to listen to.

Description of Strip Me

Recorded in Los Angeles, Strip Me reminds us of the gift Natasha Bedingfield has for creating smart, substantive pop music. Writing more than 50 songs, Bedingfield, armed with an impressive production team of modern hitmakers including GRAMMY® award winner John Shanks (Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow), Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis), Wayne Wilkins (Beyonce, Jordin Sparks), John Hill (Shakira, Santigold), Kleerup (Robyn, Cyndi Lauper), Danielle Brisebois (?Unwritten,? ?Pocketful of Sunshine?) and reuniting with Steve Kipner, who produced Natasha?s own smash hit ?These Words,? has stripped down her songs to the 13 tracks contained on her newest release. Each song on Strip Me evokes the innate desires, needs and fears which people feel in these most troubling times. Although the title of the album is provocative, the songs Natasha writes underscore the things that are important to her. Bedingfield?s message is clear. Don?t get caught up in material things. Don?t be afraid to be loved, to be supported, and to be touched. Believe in yourself and follow your heart. While the album?s theme is soulful, Bedingfield?s gifts as a singer and songwriter continue to reflect that magic spark and infectious pop sensibility that catapulted her to being the first British female artist in twenty years to score a no.1 on the U.S. Billboard pop chart with her first smash hit ?Unwritten.?
