Music Review: Still remarkable

With its fold-out cover and photo story booklet inside, "Wild Is Love" was an extravagant Capitol project. Issuing an album of all-new music was nearly unheard of at the time and to issue one written as a complete project equally unheard. Capitol had no idea what to expect but the album indeed was a hit and got big radio play. Nelson Riddle's arrangements deserve much credit; he was at his zenith here. Please note that there was NO Broadway production of "Wild Is Love." The album was written as an album and there was some consideration of taking it further as the basis for a musical, but there was no such musical ever staged. "Wild Is Love" was good enough for Patti Drew to do her own, later, version for Capitol (!) and I believe there was even a third version. Cole also did a T.V. performance of the music complete with the narrative.

Fashioned by songwriters Dotty Wayne and Ray Rasch, the songs of this cycle trace a gossamer narrative through an untamed realm of romance populated by "Hundreds and Thousands of Girls." Cole himself, of course, is the libidinous hero, equal parts confident Don Juan and aw-shucks victim of the vast labyrinth of female affection. Cole's narration--often adorned with literal instrumental accoutrements--peppers the proceedings, throughout which he vacillates between love-worn fool ("Beggar for the Blues") and unabashed publicist for the amorous art of throwing caution to the wind ("Stay with It"). In the end, of course, the album assures us of the conclusion we could see coming from the outset. "He who hesitates," insists the song of the same name, "will never know all the wonder... Your chance goes by, and it's too late to wonder why." Despite a crash-and-burn run on Broadway, Wild is Love hardly suggests its own staging on record, so what's left--taken strictly on its own terms--remains an odd but important stop on the Cole train. --Jason Kirk
