Music reviews of StillmaticMusic Review: Nas has Taken Over! Rating: 5 Stars
IN 1994, Nas released the instant classic Illmatic and was instantly named the next great MC and was crowned the greatest lyricist. After three wack commercial albums, he was doubted and dissed by all rappers and thugs nationwide. When Stillmatic was announced, many thought it would just be another Nastradamus. Well, I'm here to say the pressure was on Nas and he followed through when the going got tough and put out his best effort since Illmatic. This album features top-notch production skills and Nas performing as good lyrically as he did on Illmatic. Starting off with the intro, "Stillmatic", which actually is more like a 2 minute freestyle over a tight beat with some bangin bass. In it he proclaims "They think I'll make another Illmatic/ But it's always forward I'm moving/ Not backwards stupid/ Here's another classic," and that is exactly right. This isn't too much like Illmatic musicwise, but it's almost as good, just not the same. He is also right he moved forward from his 3 weak efforts after Illmatic, and also he is right on this CD being another classic. Next is "Ether", which you've all probably heard already. This is the tightest diss track I've heard since Ice Cube's "No Vaseline". Nas rips up Jay-Z over the entire track, and he doesn't have any limits on how far he goes. It doesn't have one of the hottest beats on the cd, but it's still a great track. After "Ether" is "Got ur Self a Gun", which is the lead single and a bangin' track that has the most up-tempo beat on the cd. This is one of the better tracks on the CD. "Smokin'" is a good track. It really is good. Just to me, it's not as good as the rest of the album so I don't listen to it too much. Next is one of my favorite 3 tracks, "You're Da Man". This track is so great it's not even funny. Large Professor delivers with a great combination of violin and hard bass. Nas spits two of the tightest verses on the album, and this track never gets old. He really got back to his poetic side on that song. Next is "Rewind", another good track. It is really cool how he spits the story backward. The story is about how he is drivin in the van smokin' with his dawg and then he sees his enemy on the block so he jump out and shoot him up. It's got a tight beat and Nas was very creative with the backwards concept. After is "One Mic" which is another one of the best songs. You can really feel his emotion on the song, and he produced the track himself, and does a great job producing. The beat starts slow then speeds up with his anger and emotion growing, and it is mad tight. To start off the 2nd half of the album, there is "2nd Childhood". This song is the best song on the CD. If Nas don't make this into a single, I really think he's gone crazy. This song is so classic it's just like whoa every time you listen to it. It's the only DJ Premier produced track on the CD, and he creates the tightest beat you can imagine. It is so soulful and great. I'm listening to the song right now and it is such an uplifting beat. He tells the story of his childhood, and how 2 people he grew up with never grew up. It is really cool how in the middle of some of the verses and on the chorus the beat switches up. After that is "Destroy and Rebuild", a diss to all the rappers he grew up with in Queensbridge. He tries to sound like Slick Rick to tell the story and does a pretty good job of doing so. He samples Boogie Down Production's "The Bridge is Over", which is a really good old-school track. "The Flyest", is definately a banger. It is the reunion of Nas and AZ, and they both spit mad tight verses and some girl sings a cool chorus. On the last verse they rap together and switch back and forth. The beat is awesome. Next is a track that really is a disgrace to Nas. "Braveheart Party" is so wack compared to other tracks on the cd it is actually a funny track. Nas spits a bad verse for his standards, the beat isn't THAT bad, but those two Bravehearts completely destroy what wouldn't have been too bad of a track. Their verses are so horrible, it is so obvious they dropped out of middle school, my god they (...). Nas, no offense, I understand they are your homies from QB, but their wack. Drop them or your career won't go anywhere. I'm not dissing Nas at all, this album is still a classic and you definately should get it, I'm just saying these two fools shouldn't be allowed into a recording studio. I mean "You could be my baby mama lookin like dat, what you drink champange or congac" is just (...) and they repeat (...) like that for their entire verses. Luckily Nas chose to include them on only one track. After that awful song which was obiviously recorded around the same time as Nastradamus, comes a great song that really has a nice message. "Rule" is a tight track that samples the 80's hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". It does a good job of doing it, and Nas proves he hasn't lost his politically concious side. He really shows his intelligence in his verses, and it is a good song that promotes peace among nations. Next is "My Country", which is the only song on the CD besides "Braveheart Party" that isn't even good enough to listen to more than a few times. I mean it's not the worst song I have ever heard, it is just so different and less progressive than the rest of the CD that I just don't like the song. "What Goes Around" is a really tight track when you put it on. It's one of those songs that you usually skip because of the outstanding quality of the other songs, but when you put it on, you realize it's just as good as alot of the others. It is a song about how he thinks alot of our world is corrupt and all of the changes he thinks should be made. Finishing out the album is "Every Ghetto", a bonus track that is great. It's got a great beat and Nas puts out some good lyrics along with an unknown guest artist. Now it's definately unfair to match ANY album against Illmatic. That CD was so good that there has never been anything to even come close to its greatness. Stillmatic is one of the first albums since Illmatic to come even close, and it came real close. Keep in mind that Illmatic had probably 5-6 classic tracks and about 4-5 good tracks. When I look at this album and compare, I come up with about 4-6 classics and 7-9 good tracks. Look at all the CD's to come out since Illmatic. The most classic tracks I've heard on an album since Illmatic besides Stillmatic is probably around 2. Stillmatic is one of the best albums to come out in the last 4 or 5 years, and although it won't be considered an instant classic like Illmatic, in 2 years or so we'll be calling it classic. Nas has 3 more albums coming before he retires, and I now have confidence he may be able to equal or beat Illmatic now that he's gone back to his roots.
