Music Review: "And If I Had To Choose Again, I Would Still Choose You"

Marty Ashby is absolutely right about Nancy Wilson being "one of the true, enduring masters whose music will live forever." In addition, she is such a distinguished singer with a great talent who can sincerely emote and effortlessly deliver a song in a spotless rendition, whether it is a song of joy or a song of lament. It has been noted that Ms. Wilson had personally selected the material for this album, "R.S.V.P." (Rare Songs, Very Personal). This is one of the top-notch jazz offerings from her discography. I am delighted that the Grammy-powers-that-be recognized its musical attributes and awarded it the Best Jazz Vocal Album of 2005. The following quote is her sentiments about the making of this award winning recording.
"I was never able to record these songs because, believe it or not, most albums have a theme that runs through them and they didn't fit into what I was doing at the moment. Still they lingered at the back of my mind....You've probably heard me say this time and time again, but it is the story contained within lyrics that get me. Love, found, lost, betrayed and held delicately in your hands and heart, are my kind of songs. Next to life itself is the love of life, family and that special someone who becomes the other half of you are the most important pieces of the heart. Therein lies the beauty of it all."
The disc is entirely impressive and though my ears are drawn to the most engaging numbers--"I Let A Song Go Out of My Heart" and "Day In Day Out," my personal favorites are "That's All" and "Blame It On My Youth." The latter is beautifully rendered with only the pristine piano accompaniment by George Shearing while the former highlights a remarkable solo by vibraphonist Gary Burton who adds ultra charms to Nancy Wilson's interpretation. Harmonica player Toots Thielemans and also sax player Phil Woods are featured on the first track, "An Older Man Is Like An Elegant Wine." Bill Watrous, a notable trombone player, can be heard in "You'll See." The other musicians/soloists/vocalists who contributed their enormous talents to make this album worthy to any jazz lover and who also deserve special mention are Joe Negri (guitar), Rufus Reid (bass guitar), Paquito d'Rivera (clarinet), Andy Snitzer (tenor saxophone), vocalists Kenny Lattimore and Ivan Lins.
Two lovely duets include an original song by Ivan Lins who sang the Portuguese version of "Minds of Their Own" (Dois Corregos), and a song by Michael Leonard and Herbert Edward Martin, "Why Did I Choose You?" with Kenny Lattimore.

Through the years, Nancy Wilson has refined her craft and evolved from a singer to a versatile, accomplished song stylist who can render any song from blues, pop, jazz standards to Broadway musicals and Hollywood movie themes in an ear-catching manner. She has also earned a well-deserved shining star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame apart from the many awards, recognitions, honorary doctorate degrees given to her in the course of her successful musical career.
