Music reviews of N Sync

Music Review: Could Be Worse... But Could Also Be Much Better
Rating: 3 Stars

Back in 1999, when teen pop was at its prime, the market was flooded with boy bands, all of which were pretty similar stylistically. `N Sync, of course, were no exception. Most people considered the group a carbon copy of the Backstreet Boys, who were also popular at the time. In terms of singles at the time, `N Sync probably had a slight edge simply because they released more uptempo songs (which tended to stick in people's heads better) whereas the Backstreet Boys released more ballads and mid-tempos. While `N Sync's debut had quite a few great songs, it did little to stand out from any other boyband debuts. It followed the typical formula of catchy dance numbers and syrupy ballads designed to make teenage (and pre-teen) girl's hearts melt. The album ended up being decent to listen to but mostly forgettable, as was the case with most boybands.

First up is a personal favourite, "Tearin' Up My Heart". This is the typical semi-romantic upbeat song designed to make every female fan think the boys were singing specifically to them but it actually works. The vocals are decent but seem a little synthesized but the real appeal to this song is the catchy beat and nice lyrics. "I Just Wanna Be With You" follows and is a step down in almost every way. Vocally, the harmonies sound great and whichever boy is singing the verses (Justin maybe? They all sound pretty much the same to me) does a great job. The lyrics border on subpar and there is a mildly annoying background singer (the one that sings high-pitched) that seems out of place but otherwise the song is decent. From two good songs, the boys falter into mediocrity in the form of "Here We Go". While the vocals in the verses sound pretty good, the lyrics are just too weak for my taste. Also, songs, like this one, that are only about partying are rarely anything too special.

"For The Girl Who Has Everything" strikes me one of two ways. It either comes off as sweet or as completely contrived. The song attempts to explain how the boys give their love to a girl who already has everything else (cars, clothes, etc.) The harmonies are wonderful and the boys actually share the vocals in this one. The lyrics come off a little forced at times but it is mostly a great song. However, towards the end of the song, the chorus is repeated about two times too many. Another personal favourite, "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You", comes next. The lyrics are poetic and romantic and whichever boy sings lead in the first verse or two sounds great. The major downside is that the song is about half a minute too long. "You Got It" seems out of place after the two slower tracks. It is not a bad song per se, but it is not all that memorable. It tries to be deep but cannot quite pull it off.

"I Need Love" carries on in the same vein, though what it lacks in catchiness it makes up for in repetitiveness. The chorus is repeated far too many times making the song seem longer than it is. The lyrics in the verses seem like a weak attempt to be a little deeper than most other dance songs and it may have worked had the chorus not been so monotonous. "I Want You Back" is fairly typical, especially for the time period. The background music reminds me of a Backstreet Boys song and the vocals seem just a little whiny which takes away from the already dwindling quality. As a dance track, it is great but as a song in general, it could be better. Next up is "Everything I Own" which has more in common with "God Must Have..." than with the previous three tracks. The lyrics are syrupy but romantic though it would be nice if the boys shared more vocals during the verses instead of only harmonizing in the chorus as they always do. This is not as good as the other ballads, but still decent.

And speaking of good ballads, we come to "I Drive Myself Crazy" which is lyrically the strongest song on the album. It's about missing someone after you break up and wondering why you couldn't see what you had when you were together. Whichever boy sings lead (I think it's Justin) sounds great and harmonies in the chorus are once again great. "Crazy For You" is another fairly typical dance song where the chorus is repeated a few times too many and the lyrics are not nearly as strong as they should be. It's nice to dance to, but not good for much else. Next is a remake of Christopher Cross's "Sailing" which showcases the boy's harmonizing skills wonderfully but does not stand out enough from other songs to be truly memorable. Lastly is "Giddy Up" which sounds like it should have been placed earlier in the album. It is another typical dance track with pretty confusing lyrics.

Overall Mark: 3/5

The boys of `N Sync (Justin, JC, Lance, Joey and Chris) sound awesome when harmonizing, as they do in many songs, however the album seems to focus on only one or two of the boys as lead singers. This makes the other three sound like mere background singers instead of actual members of the group. Material-wise, the album has its ups and downs, the ballads being the real highpoints. A few dance songs sound good but they mostly sound like carbon copies of each other, making it hard to distinguish them from the pack. Nonetheless, the boys appealed well enough to their fanbase that they managed to wrangle two more albums plus a Christmas album. Whether their popularity is justified or not is a whole other story. Personally, I think they should have focused more on allowing each member to sing lead instead of focusing on only two.
