Music Review: A Calm Presentation

Yes, the recorded sound is very good, but it unfortunately highlights these relatively calm and sometimes boring recordings of Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bare Mountain. The balance between strings-woodwinds and brass-percussion is very tight, but with playing this quiet, it is truly easy to balance. The Russian National Orchestra at no time plays with any pomp or excitement, rather it seems continuously bored by the music. The slow and quiet parts are excellently done for sure, but the Great Gate of Kiev is quiet and dull. In addition, throughout Pictures there is a recurring theme of the brass and percussion being unable to start notes together, which only dampens the impact of what should be truly grand music. The additional pieces on this disc are nice treats, but I don't recommend spending $18 for 16 minutes of relatively rare Mussorgsky music. There are other much better versions of Pictures and Night on Bare Mountain: Reiner-Chicago, Sinopolli-New York, or Karajan-Berlin. Buy those and skip this.
